Travel guide
The best time to visit Lake Natron is during the dry season from June to October, when the weather is clearer, roads are more accessible, and conditions are ideal for exploring the lake and surrounding landscapes.
January sits at the end of the short rainy season. Lake Natron is green and scenic, flamingo numbers are strong, and the landscape is excellent for photography. Oldoinyo Lengai can still be climbed, though trails may be slippery after rain.
February offers good flamingo viewing around Lake Natron and green landscapes for photography. Conditions on Lengai are variable; early starts help avoid the heat, and some rain is still possible.
March marks the start of the long rains. Lake Natron roads can become difficult, Lengai trails get slippery, and cloud may limit summit views. This is the quietest time and best avoided for trekking unless you are very flexible.
April is the wettest month around Lake Natron. Roads are often impassable, the Lengai climb is extremely tough, and visibility is poor. Most travellers choose other months for this region.
The long rains ease toward the end of May. Landscapes remain lush, birdlife is excellent, and access slowly improves. Trekking conditions improve but are still less reliable than the dry season.
June begins the dry season and the best period for climbing Oldoinyo Lengai. Trails firm up, nights are cooler, and sunrise views from the summit become more reliable. Lake Natron is accessible and rewarding.
July is one of the best months to visit Lake Natron and climb Oldoinyo Lengai. Cool, dry nights make the night ascent more comfortable, and the sunrise over the Rift Valley is usually crystal clear.
August offers reliably dry conditions, cool nights for the climb, and stunning panoramic views from the summit. Lake Natron is at its most accessible and the flamingos remain present.
September continues the excellent dry-season window. The Lengai climb remains highly recommended, and Lake Natron offers great scenery, wildlife, and photography in warm but manageable conditions.
October remains excellent for climbing and exploring Lake Natron. Conditions are dry and warm, with good road access and rewarding sunrise views from the volcano.
November brings the short rainy season. Afternoon showers are possible, trails become slick, and summit views less certain. However, the area is quiet and the landscape quickly greens again.
December can start wet but often dries toward the holidays. It is a popular travel period, so lodges near Lake Natron fill quickly. Trekking is possible but less predictable than June to October.
From November to May, the area becomes greener and more scenic, with seasonal rains transforming the landscape and attracting large flocks of flamingos to the lake. This period is especially great for photography and birdwatching, while the dry season remains best for trekking and cultural visits.
