1 Day

Day 1: Arusha to Lake Natron — Waterfalls & Maasai Village

Depart Arusha at 7:00 AM and drive to Lake Natron via scenic and remote landscapes, enjoying packed lunch en route. Set at the base of Ol Doinyo Lengai, Lake Natron offers some of the most dramatic and breathtaking scenery in Tanzania. Upon arrival, explore the area with your guide and a local Maasai guide, walking through a shaded gorge to the Engare Sero Waterfalls. Reach a natural swimming pool surrounded by steep rock walls and cascading spring water, with time to relax and swim. In the evening, visit a local Maasai village for an authentic cultural experience before settling in for dinner and overnight at Lake Natron Camp.

2 Day

Day 2: Ol Doinyo Lengai Summit Climb — Sunrise at the Mountain of God

Your mountain adventure begins just after midnight. After a light snack and some tea, you'll be transferred to the base of Ol Doinyo Lengai for the climb. Standing at 2,962 metres (9,718 feet), this sacred volcano challenges trekkers with its steep and rugged terrain. Guided by an experienced local Maasai mountaineer, you'll ascend slowly under the stars. Reaching the summit at sunrise, you'll witness breathtaking views of the Rift Valley, Lake Natron, and surrounding volcanic peaks. Ol Doinyo Lengai is one of the few active volcanoes remaining in East Africa with unique natrocarbonatite lava — the coolest lava on Earth. After capturing incredible photos, begin your descent (3-4 hours) back to the lodge for well-earned rest and relaxation.

Day 3: Lake Natron Flamingo Walk & Return to Arusha

After breakfast, set out for a guided walk along the shores of Lake Natron, a surreal soda lake famous for its pink flamingos and other birdlife. This alkaline lake is one of the most important breeding grounds for lesser flamingos in East Africa. The red-hued waters, caused by special bacteria, create an otherworldly landscape perfect for photography. After your lakeside exploration, return to the lodge for a hot lunch before beginning your drive back to Arusha, where your adventure concludes with drop-off at your hotel or the airport.

Fitness Requirements

Ol Doinyo Lengai climb is physically demanding. You should be able to hike 6-8 hours on steep, uneven terrain. Previous trekking experience is recommended but not mandatory.

Altitude

The summit is at 2,962m (9,718ft). No high-altitude acclimatization is needed, but be prepared for cool temperatures at the top.

What to Bring

Best Time to Visit

June to October (dry season) offers the best conditions for climbing and flamingo viewing. The climb is possible year-round but trails can be slippery during rains.
