Saadani National Park Overview

Saadani National Park covers approximately 1,100 square kilometres along the Indian Ocean coast of Tanzania, about 130 kilometres north of Dar es Salaam. It is the only wildlife-protected area in East Africa where the savannah meets the sea. This unique position gives Saadani a character unlike any other park in Tanzania — you can watch elephants grazing on the beach, see hippos in the Wami River, and spot humpback whales from the shore, all in the same visit.

The park was established in 2005, though the area had been a game reserve since the 1960s. It is still relatively unknown compared to parks like Serengeti or Ngorongoro, which means fewer visitors and a more intimate safari experience. Saadani is home to elephants, giraffes, lions, buffalo, wildebeest, zebras, and various antelope species. The Wami River supports a population of hippos and crocodiles, and the park is rich in birdlife with over 300 species recorded.

Wildlife in Saadani

While Saadani does not have the sheer density of wildlife found in the northern circuit parks, it offers something no other Tanzanian park can — the combination of land and marine environments. Elephants are the most commonly seen large mammals, often found near the river and along the coast. Giraffes are frequently spotted in the open savannah areas, and lions live in the park though they are harder to find than in Serengeti or Ngorongoro. Buffalo, waterbuck, reedbuck, wildebeest, and zebras are all present.

The Wami River is a highlight of any visit. Boat safaris along the river bring you close to pods of hippos, Nile crocodiles, and an impressive array of birdlife. Fish eagles, malachite kingfishers, palm nut vultures, and flamingos are among the species commonly seen. The river mouth where it meets the Indian Ocean is a particularly productive area for birding and wildlife viewing.

Whale Watching and Marine Life

From July to October, humpback whales migrate through the warm waters off the Saadani coast. They can often be spotted from the beach or from a boat, breaching and tail-slapping in the Indian Ocean. This is one of the few places in Tanzania where whale watching is possible. The coastal waters also support dolphins, sea turtles, and seasonal whale sharks. The nearby Mafia Island Marine Park, though not technically part of Saadani, adds to the region's marine biodiversity.

Boat Safaris and Beach Walks

A boat safari on the Wami River is one of the top activities in Saadani. The trip takes you upstream through mangrove forests and riverine woodland, with chances to see hippos, crocodiles, monitor lizards, and numerous bird species. Some trips continue to the river mouth where freshwater meets the Indian Ocean — a unique ecosystem that supports a variety of marine and terrestrial life.

Beach walks along the Saadani coast are a surreal experience. After a morning game drive, you can walk along a pristine, deserted Indian Ocean beach with no other people in sight. During whale season, you may spot whales from the shore. The beach is also an important nesting site for sea turtles, and conservation efforts are in place to protect these vulnerable creatures.

Getting to Saadani

Saadani is located about 130 kilometres north of Dar es Salaam. By road, the drive takes approximately 3 to 4 hours via the main coastal highway. The road is paved for most of the journey, with a final section of dirt road leading to the park gates. For those short on time, scheduled and charter flights from Dar es Salaam or Arusha are available, landing at airstrips within or near the park.

The park can be visited as a day trip from Dar es Salaam, though an overnight stay is recommended to fully experience the park's diverse activities. Most visitors combine Saadani with a coastal beach holiday or a longer Tanzania safari itinerary that includes the northern circuit parks.

Best Time to Visit

Saadani can be visited year-round, but the best time depends on your interests. The dry season from June to October offers the best game viewing as animals concentrate around water sources. This is also whale-watching season, making it the most popular time to visit. The wet season from November to May brings lush, green landscapes and excellent birding, with migratory species present from November to April. Temperatures are warm throughout the year, ranging from 25 to 32 degrees Celsius.

Where to Stay

Saadani has a range of accommodation options within and near the park. The Saadani Safari Lodge offers luxury tented accommodation right on the beach, with views of the Indian Ocean. The Bagamoyo Beach Resort and Lodge is located just outside the park and offers a more budget-friendly option. For a truly unique experience, there are mobile tented camps that move with the seasons, providing an intimate bush-and-beach safari experience.
