The Lemosho Route is widely considered the best Kilimanjaro route. It offers the highest summit success rate on the mountain — approximately 95% — and combines spectacular scenery, excellent acclimatization, and a quiet, pristine start that no other popular route can match. At Bush Lion Tours, Lemosho is our top recommendation for climbers who want the best possible chance of reaching Uhuru Peak.
Overview
The Lemosho Route approaches Kilimanjaro from the west, starting at the Londorossi Gate on the remote western flank of the mountain. Unlike the busy southern routes, Lemosho begins in dense, untouched rainforest with very few other groups on the trail. The route traverses the beautiful Shira Plateau — one of the highest plateaus in Africa — before joining the Machame Route corridor for the final approach to the summit via the Barranco Wall and Barafu Camp.
Lemosho is typically completed in 7 or 8 days. The 8-day itinerary provides the best acclimatization and the highest success rate. The route is a traverse — you approach from the west and descend via the Mweka Trail on the southeast, so you never repeat the same section twice.
The Western Traverse
By approaching from the west, you avoid the crowds that flock to the southern routes. The first three days are remarkably quiet — you may not see another group until you join the Machame corridor on day 5. The Shira Plateau crossing offers vast, unobstructed views that no other route provides.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Drive from Moshi to Londorossi Gate on the western side of Kilimanjaro (about 2.5 hours). Begin hiking through pristine tropical rainforest — the trail is quiet, the canopy is thick, and you may spot colobus monkeys and blue monkeys. Arrive at Mti Mkubwa Camp ("Big Tree Camp") in a clearing in the forest.
Climb out of the rainforest into the heath and moorland zone. The vegetation changes dramatically — giant heather, lobelia, and groundsels replace the forest. Cross the Shira Ridge and enter the vast Shira Plateau. The landscape is open and expansive, with views of Kibo and Mawenzi ahead.
Cross the Shira Plateau towards Kibo. The terrain is flat and otherworldly — a high-altitude desert with volcanic rock and sparse vegetation. Arrive at Moir Hut, a small campsite in a sheltered valley with dramatic views of the Lent Hills. Excellent acclimatization point.
Today is a dedicated acclimatization day. Hike up into the Lent Hills (up to 4,600 m) and return to Moir Hut. The extra altitude gain and descent is the single most important factor in Lemosho's high success rate. You climb high and sleep low, giving your body time to produce red blood cells and adjust to the thin air.
Continue across the alpine desert towards Lava Tower (4,630 m), a dramatic volcanic rock formation. Descend from Lava Tower into the Barranco Valley. This descent is a key acclimatization strategy — you gain altitude during the day and sleep lower at night. Arrive at Barranco Camp in the shadow of the imposing Barranco Wall.
Conquer the Barranco Wall — a 250-metre rock scramble that is the most exciting section of the climb. Use your hands and feet to scale the wall, then traverse to Karanga Camp with stunning views of the glaciers above. The terrain is dramatic and the views are spectacular.
Climb steadily to Barafu Camp, the base for the summit push. The landscape is barren and exposed. Arrive by mid-afternoon, eat an early dinner, and rest before the midnight summit start.
Wake at 11:00 PM for the summit push. Hike by headlamp through scree to Stella Point and along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak. Arrive at sunrise. Descend to Barafu for breakfast, then continue down to Mweka Camp through scree and rainforest.
Descend through the rainforest to Mweka Gate. Collect your summit certificate and transfer to Moshi.
Highest on Kilimanjaro
The 8-day Lemosho Route has the highest summit success rate of any Kilimanjaro route. The extra acclimatization days, gradual altitude gain, and "climb high, sleep low" profile give your body the best possible chance of adapting. This is why we recommend Lemosho above all other routes.
