The Machame Route is the most popular Kilimanjaro route, and for good reason. Known as the "Whisky Route" — named after the Scotsman who first guided climbers on this path — Machame offers the best combination of scenery, acclimatization, and challenge on the mountain. It is the route we recommend most often at Bush Lion Tours, and it delivers a summit success rate of 82–85% when done over 6 or 7 days.
Overview
The Machame Route approaches Kilimanjaro from the southwest, starting at Machame Gate on the southern flank of the mountain. Unlike the Marangu Route, Machame is a camping route — you sleep in tents at designated campsites along the trail. The route traverses five ecological zones and includes the famous Barranco Wall, a short but exhilarating scramble that is one of the highlights of any Kilimanjaro climb.
Machame is typically completed in 6 or 7 days. The 7-day itinerary is strongly recommended because it includes an extra acclimatization day that significantly increases your chances of reaching the summit.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Drive from Moshi to Machame Gate (about 45 minutes). Begin hiking through lush tropical rainforest on a wide, well-maintained trail. The forest is dense and humid, with giant trees, ferns, and colobus monkeys visible in the canopy. After 5–6 hours of steady climbing, arrive at Machame Camp in the heath zone, where you break out above the treeline.
Cross the heath and moorland zone, climbing steadily towards the Shira Plateau. The landscape opens up dramatically — giant heather, lobelia, and groundsels replace the forest, and views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks appear ahead. Arrive at Shira Camp on the edge of the vast Shira Plateau, one of the highest plateaus in Africa.
Today is a long but spectacular day. Cross the Shira Plateau and climb towards Lava Tower (4,630 m), a dramatic volcanic rock formation. Descend from Lava Tower into the Barranco Valley, passing through alpine desert and across the Barranco Glacier moraine. This "climb high, sleep low" profile is excellent for acclimatization.
On the 7-day itinerary, today is spent acclimatizing around Barranco Camp. You hike up towards the Barranco Wall for practice scrambling and return to camp. This extra day is the single biggest factor in Machame's high success rate. On the 6-day itinerary, you skip this day and proceed directly to Karanga Camp.
Climb steadily through alpine desert to Barafu Camp, the base camp for the summit push. The terrain is barren and exposed, with little vegetation. Arrive by mid-afternoon, eat an early dinner, and try to rest before the midnight summit start. Barafu sits on a narrow ridge with dramatic views of Mawenzi peak and the Tanzanian plains far below.
Wake at 11:00 PM for the summit push. Hike by headlamp through scree to Stella Point and then along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak. Arrive at sunrise. Descend to Barafu for breakfast, then continue down the steep Mweka Trail through scree and into the rainforest to Mweka Camp. The descent is long and hard on the knees — trekking poles are essential.
Descend through the rainforest to Mweka Gate. Collect your summit certificate and transfer to Moshi.
High Success, Best Value
The 7-day Machame Route delivers an 82–85% summit success rate — the Barranco Wall and "climb high, sleep low" profile give excellent natural acclimatization. It's the best balance of scenery, challenge, and probability on the mountain.
