Arusha to Tarangire National Park

After breakfast, depart Arusha and drive to Tarangire National Park — known as the Land of Giants. This park is famous for its ancient baobab trees, some over 1,000 years old, and for having the largest elephant herds in northern Tanzania. During the dry season, hundreds of elephants gather along the Tarangire River. You will also spot lions, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, and over 550 bird species. Enjoy a picnic lunch inside the park, then continue with afternoon game drives before heading to your lodge in Karatu.

Continue across the conservation area, passing Maasai villages and vast open plains, before entering Serengeti National Park from the south. The Serengeti is truly spectacular — famous for its endless golden grasslands and incredible wildlife density. It is home to over 3 million animals and is best known for the annual Great Wildebeest Migration. Enjoy afternoon game drives en route to your camp in Central Serengeti.

Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater

After breakfast, enjoy a final morning game drive through the Serengeti as you wind your way toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Arrive at the Ngorongoro Crater — a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The crater was formed when a massive volcano exploded and collapsed on itself 2-3 million years ago. Descend 610 metres into the caldera for a half-day game drive. The crater shelters over 25,000 animals including the endangered black rhino, large lion prides, elephants, flamingos, and more than 500 bird species. After the game drive, ascend the crater wall and drive to your lodge in Karatu.

Lake Manyara National Park and Departure

After breakfast, drive to Lake Manyara National Park — a compact but incredibly diverse park nestled at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment. The park is famous for its tree-climbing lions, vast flocks of flamingos (seasonal), and thick evergreen groundwater forest where baboons and elephants roam. Enjoy a morning game drive along the lakeshore and through the forest, with a picnic lunch inside the park. After the game drive, transfer to Arusha, Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), or Arusha Airport for your departure.

Important information

Practical details every traveller should read before confirming. We'll cover everything again in your pre-departure pack.

Visa and Passport

All visitors need a valid passport (6+ months validity) and a Tanzania visa. You can apply for an e-visa online before travel or get one on arrival at the airport. Cost is approximately $50 USD for most nationalities.

Vaccinations

Yellow fever vaccination is required if arriving from an endemic country. Recommended: Hepatitis A & B, Typhoid, Tetanus, and Malaria prophylaxis. Consult your travel doctor at least 6 weeks before departure.

Currency and Payments

Tanzanian Shilling (TZS) is the local currency. USD is widely accepted for tips and extras. ATMs are available in Arusha. Credit cards accepted at lodges but carry cash for tips and small purchases.

Tipping Guidelines

Tipping is customary and appreciated. Recommended: $50-60 per day for your safari guide, $20-30 per day for the cook (if applicable), and $5-10 per day for lodge staff. Tips are per group, not per person

Weather and Clothing

Days can be warm (25-30°C) but mornings and evenings are cold (5-15°C), especially on early game drives. Layered clothing is essential. Neutral colours (khaki, green, brown) are recommended. Avoid bright colours and dark blue (attracts tsetse flies).

Travel Insurance

Comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory and must cover medical evacuation, trip cancellation, and emergency medical expenses. AMREF Flying Doctors evacuation is included in your safari but does not replace personal travel insurance.

Game Drive Etiquette

Stay inside the vehicle at all times during game drives. Keep noise to a minimum near wildlife. Do not feed animals. Follow your guide instructions at all times. Maximum 6 passengers per vehicle for optimal viewing.
