5-Day Camping Safari in Tanzania — Tarangire, Serengeti & Ngorongoro

Wake early for a sunrise game drive in Tarangire — this is when predators are most active and the morning light paints the baobabs in golden hues. Watch lions returning from their nightly hunts, cheetahs scanning the plains for prey, and elephants bathing in the morning dew.

After a bush breakfast, you'll depart Tarangire and drive approximately 1.5 hours to Lake Manyara National Park. The park is dramatically different from Tarangire — a narrow strip of lush ground-water forest at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment, with the soda lake stretching out to the west.

Lake Manyara is famous for its tree-climbing lions — one of the few populations in Africa that regularly climb trees. Your guide will take you through the dense forest where these elusive cats rest in the branches of acacia trees. The park is also home to large elephant herds, giraffes, hippos, and thousands of flamingos that colour the lakeshore pink.

As the afternoon progresses, you'll drive along the lakeshore, spotting hippos basking in the shallows and flocks of pelicans diving for fish. The park's ground-water forest is home to blue monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys, and bushbuck.

Tonight, you'll camp at Lake Manyara campsite, with the sounds of the forest surrounding you.

Rise before dawn for a final game drive in Lake Manyara. The early morning light filters through the ground-water forest, creating magical conditions for photography. Look for the park's famous tree-climbing lions, as well as large elephant herds and prolific birdlife.

After breakfast, you'll depart Lake Manyara and begin the scenic drive to the Serengeti. The route takes you through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, ascending the highlands with breathtaking views of the crater rim below. The landscape changes dramatically — from the lush forests of Manyara to the open highlands dotted with Maasai pastoralists and their cattle.

As you approach the Serengeti, the landscape transforms into the iconic endless plains that have inspired countless wildlife documentaries. Depending on the season, you may encounter massive herds of wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle during the Great Migration, or resident predator prides that patrol the Seronera Valley year-round.

Your afternoon game drive explores the central Serengeti, home to the highest concentration of lions in Africa. The Seronera Valley is dotted with kopjes — ancient rock formations where leopards rest and cheetahs scan for prey.

Tonight, you'll camp at Seronera Public Campsite in the heart of the Serengeti, surrounded by the sounds of the bush.

Rise before dawn for a pre-dawn game drive on the Serengeti plains — the best time to witness predator activity. Early morning is magical: the grass glistens with dew, lions make their last kills before the heat of the day, and cheetahs use the cool temperatures to hunt. The golden light of sunrise paints the plains in extraordinary colours, creating perfect photography conditions.

After a hearty bush breakfast, you'll continue exploring the Serengeti, searching for the Big Five and the Great Migration herds. The Serengeti is one of the few places on Earth where you can witness predator-prey interactions on such a massive scale — from lion prides taking down buffalo to cheetahs sprinting after gazelles.

In the afternoon, you'll begin the drive to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. As you ascend the highlands, the views become increasingly dramatic — rolling hills, Maasai bomas (homesteads), and the vast crater rim stretching across the horizon.

As you approach the Ngorongoro Crater rim, you'll understand why it's called the 'Eighth Wonder of the World.' The crater is 610 metres deep and 20 kilometres across — a self-contained ecosystem where over 25,000 animals live in remarkable density. From the rim, the views are breathtaking — the crater floor stretches out below like a vast green bowl, dotted with flamingos on Lake Magadi and herds of wildlife.

Settle into your campsite on the crater rim at 2,200 metres altitude. The air is cool and crisp, and on clear nights, the stars are extraordinary.

Today is the crown jewel of your safari. After an early breakfast, you'll descend into the Ngorongoro Crater — a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

The descent takes about 45 minutes, winding down the steep crater wall through dense montane forest. As you reach the floor, the landscape opens into a vast grassland dotted with flamingos, hippos wallowing in pools, and herds of wildebeest and zebra grazing peacefully.

The crater is one of the few places on Earth where you can see all Big Five in a single day. Approximately 70 lions, 15 black rhinos, 600 buffalo, 3,000 elephant, and over 500 bird species call this place home. Your guide will take you to the best spots — the hippo pool at Lake Magadi, the acacia forests where leopards hide, and the open plains where lions bask in the morning sun.

Enjoy a picnic lunch at the hippo pool, watching these massive creatures surface and submerge in the crystal-clear water. The afternoon is spent exploring the remaining areas, searching for any Big Five members you haven't yet spotted.

As the afternoon light fades, you'll ascend the crater wall and begin the drive back to Arusha, arriving in the late afternoon.
