Tanzania trekking
Mount Meru is often called Kilimanjaro's little brother, but it is a superb mountain in its own right. Rising to 4,566 metres inside Arusha National Park, it offers a quieter and more intimate trekking experience than its famous neighbour, with wildlife on the lower slopes, dramatic volcanic scenery above, and one of the finest summit sunrises in East Africa.
The route begins in montane forest alive with colobus monkeys and birds, then climbs through giant heather and open moorland before reaching the dramatic crater rim. From Socialist Peak, the views stretch across the Meru caldera to the distant, snow-capped summit of Kilimanjaro.
With Bush Lion Tours, every climb is carefully planned: expert guides, armed ranger escorts, full mountain support, and a pace that gives you the best chance of a safe and enjoyable summit day.

Expert advice
The best time to hike Mount Meru is during the dry seasons, from June to October and December to February, when the weather is clear and trails are more stable.
January falls within the dry season window and offers clear skies, stable trails, and good visibility. It is a popular time for hikers combining Meru with a Kilimanjaro climb, so early booking is recommended.
February is one of the best months for hiking Mount Meru. The weather is warm and mostly dry, trails are firm, and morning views of Kilimanjaro are often at their clearest. It is an ideal time for a pre-Kilimanjaro acclimatisation climb.
March marks the start of the long rains. Trails become muddy and summit visibility can be limited. Some hikers still climb for the lush scenery and quiet trails, but waterproof gear and flexibility are essential.
April is the wettest month on Meru. Afternoon downpours are common, trails can be slippery, and cloud may obscure views. Most climbers avoid this month unless they specifically want solitude and green landscapes.
The long rains ease toward the end of May. Landscapes remain lush and trails are still damp, but conditions gradually improve. It is a peaceful time to hike with few other climbers on the mountain.
June brings the return of dry, stable weather. Trails firm up, vegetation thins, and wildlife becomes easier to spot on the lower slopes. It is the beginning of the main climbing season on Meru.
July is one of the best months to climb Mount Meru. The dry season is well established, trails are in excellent condition, and the mountain air is cool and crisp. Morning views of Kilimanjaro are usually outstanding.
August offers reliably dry and cool conditions. It is peak climbing season, so trails are busy but the weather and visibility are hard to beat. A perfect time to combine Meru with a northern circuit safari.
September continues the dry season with warm days and cold nights. Trails remain firm and wildlife viewing on the lower slopes is rewarding. It is also a fine month to add a safari or Kilimanjaro extension.
October is still excellent for hiking Meru, with dry conditions and clear skies. Later in the month a few isolated showers may appear, but the mountain generally remains accessible and rewarding.
November brings the short rainy season. Rain usually falls in brief bursts, but trails can become slippery and summit views less reliable. If you do not mind variable weather, the mountain is much quieter.
December often starts wet but dries out toward the holidays. It is a popular time for travellers combining Christmas and New Year trips, so lodges and camps fill quickly around the festive period.
The rainy seasons, especially March to May and November, bring greener scenery and fewer crowds, but trails can be slippery and more challenging. With proper planning and guidance from Bush Lion Tours, you can choose the ideal time for a safe and rewarding Mount Meru hiking experience.
