Route Overview

Why Choose the Marangu Route?

The Marangu Route is the most popular and accessible route on Kilimanjaro, earning its nickname as the "Coca-Cola Route" because it's the most familiar and comfortable option. Unlike all other routes, Marangu offers permanent hut accommodation, meaning you don't need to sleep in tents.

Starting from the Marangu Gate on the southeastern side of the mountain, the route follows a well-maintained trail through lush rainforest and moorland. The gradual slope makes it an excellent choice for first-time trekkers, families, and those who prefer the comfort of solid shelter after a long day of hiking.

Marangu is also the most affordable Kilimanjaro route, making it accessible to a wider range of adventurers. While the 5-day option is the fastest, the 6-day itinerary is strongly recommended for better acclimatization and a significantly higher summit success rate.

Marangu Route Itinerary

Follow the detailed day-by-day journey from the gate to the summit of Kilimanjaro.

1
Marangu Gate (1,800m) → Mandara Hut (2,700m)
1,800m – 2,700m ~8 km 4-5 hours Mandara Hut

Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins at the Marangu Gate, where you'll register with the park authorities and meet your guides and porters. The trail winds through lush tropical rainforest teeming with birdlife and colobus monkeys. The forest canopy gradually opens as you ascend through dense vegetation. You'll arrive at Mandara Hut, a charming stone building with dormitory-style rooms. Take a short optional walk to the Maundi Crater for panoramic views of the surrounding forest and plains.

2
Mandara Hut (2,700m) → Horombo Hut (3,720m)
2,700m – 3,720m ~12 km 5-6 hours Horombo Hut

Today you trek through open moorland, leaving the rainforest behind. The trail is well-defined with stunning views of Mawenzi Peak emerging on the horizon. You'll pass through giant heather and grassland with iconic giant lobelias and groundsels — plants found nowhere else on Earth. As you approach Horombo Hut, the landscape opens up dramatically. Horombo is the largest hut on the route and sits on a ridge with breathtaking views of both Mawenzi and Kibo peaks.

3
Acclimatization Day at Horombo (3,720m)
3,720m – 4,200m (day hike) ~5 km 2-3 hours Horombo Hut

This is your crucial acclimatization day. You'll hike up toward Zebra Rocks (around 4,200m) before descending back to sleep at Horombo — following the "climb high, sleep low" principle essential for safe altitude adjustment. Take this day at a leisurely pace, hydrate well, and enjoy the increasingly dramatic alpine scenery. The optional excursion to Zebra Rocks rewards you with striking striped rock formations and sweeping panoramic views of the plains below.

4
Horombo (3,720m) → Kibo Hut (4,700m)
3,720m – 4,700m ~10 km 5-6 hours Kibo Hut

The landscape transforms dramatically as you leave the moorland behind and enter the stark, moon-like alpine desert. The terrain becomes increasingly barren with sparse vegetation. You'll pass the "last water" point before reaching the Kibo Hut, a stone building at the base of Kibo Crater. Arrive early, have dinner, and get to bed by 7 PM — you'll wake for the summit push in just a few hours. The dry, thin air here signals you're entering extreme altitude territory.

5
Kibo Hut (4,700m) → Uhuru Peak (5,895m) → Horombo (3,720m)
4,700m – 5,895m – 3,720m ~22 km 12-16 hours Horombo Hut

The big day begins around midnight. You'll trek through the night by headlamp, ascending the steep scree slope of Kibo via Gillman's Point (5,681m). From Gillman's Point, follow the crater rim to Stella Point (5,756m) and then to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — the highest point in Africa! Watch the sun rise over the vast African plains below. After celebrating at the summit, descend rapidly back to Kibo Hut, collect your gear, and continue down to Horombo Hut for the night. This is the most demanding day but absolutely life-changing.

6
Horombo (3,720m) → Marangu Gate (1,800m)
3,720m – 1,800m ~20 km 5-6 hours Hotel

Your final day on the mountain. Descend through the moorland and heath zones, retracing your steps past Mandara Hut and through the beautiful rainforest. The descent is quicker than the ascent, and you'll feel the warmth and oxygen of the lower elevations returning. Arrive at the Marangu Gate where you'll receive your summit certificate from the Kilimanjaro National Park authorities. Celebrate with your guides and porters, and transfer to your hotel in Moshi for a well-deserved rest and celebration.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

The Marangu Route earned the "Coca-Cola Route" nickname because it was the first route to be developed with hut accommodation and infrastructure, making it feel more familiar and comfortable — like drinking a Coca-Cola. The huts are basic but solid stone buildings with wooden bunks, and some even sell snacks and drinks along the way. It's the most accessible route for first-time trekkers.
The 6-Day itinerary is strongly recommended. The extra day includes a crucial acclimatization day at Horombo Hut, which significantly increases your summit success rate from about 65% to 85%. The 5-Day option skips this rest day, making it more challenging and riskier for altitude sickness. Unless you are very experienced at high altitude, always choose the 6-Day itinerary.
The huts on the Marangu Route are multi-room stone buildings with wooden bunk beds. Each room typically holds 6-8 trekkers. The huts have basic toilet facilities and some have solar-heated hot water for washing. Bring a sleeping bag rated to -10°C as the bunks do not include bedding. The huts are dry, warm, and provide solid shelter — a major advantage over camping in rain or wind.
The Marangu Route has an overall summit success rate of approximately 85% with the 6-Day itinerary and around 65% with the 5-Day itinerary. The success rate is lower than Lemosho (98%) because the route has a steeper ascent profile on summit day. Our experienced guides manage your pace carefully, and choosing the 6-Day option with the acclimatization day gives you the best chance of reaching Uhuru Peak.
The best months are January-March and June-October. June-October is the dry season with clear skies and the most departures — ideal for first-timers. January-March offers warmer temperatures, fewer crowds, and excellent visibility. April-May (long rains) and November (short rains) are possible but less recommended due to slippery trails and reduced visibility.
You still need proper trekking gear even with hut accommodation: waterproof jacket and trousers, thermal layers, warm fleece, summit gloves, UV sunglasses, headlamp with spare batteries, trekking poles, hydration system (3L), and a sleeping bag rated to -10°C. The huts provide shelter but no bedding. We provide a detailed packing list after booking and gear rental is available in Moshi.
