With an extra acclimatisation day at Horombo, including a 'climb high, sleep low' hike up the Mawenzi Ridge, you'll be well-prepared for the alpine desert crossing to Kibo Hut. The summit push takes you via the normal route to Gilman's Point on the crater rim, then on to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 m — the Roof of Africa.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

2 Day

Marangu Gate → Mandara Hut

Your trek begins at Marangu Gate (1,870 m) after park registration. The trail winds through the lush montane rainforest — a world of towering trees, thick mosses, and colourful birdlife. The well-maintained path climbs gently through the forest zone to Mandara Hut (2,700 m), a cluster of wooden A-frame huts set in a picturesque forest clearing. On clear afternoons, the surrounding canopy comes alive with the calls of black-and-white colobus monkeys and turaco birds.

What you'll do: Hike through the beautiful rainforest at a gentle pace, stopping at Maundi Crater viewpoint for your first glimpse of the surrounding landscape.
What's included today: Park fees, mountain crew support, all meals, hut accommodation, drinking water, professional guides, and porter services.
Good to know: The trail is well-graded and easy to follow — one of the reasons Marangu is the most accessible route. The 'pole pole' (slowly, slowly) pace starts today.
3 Day

Mandara Hut → Horombo Hut

Leave the rainforest behind as you ascend into the heath and moorland zone. The trail opens up dramatically, offering panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and the vast Tanzanian plains below. You'll pass through fields of giant heather, lobelias, and groundsels as you make your way to Horombo Hut (3,720 m) — the largest hut complex on the mountain, set against the backdrop of the towering Kibo and Mawenzi peaks.

4 Day

Horombo Hut Acclimatisation Day (Mawenzi Ridge Hike)

A dedicated acclimatisation day — the key difference from the 5-day itinerary. After breakfast, hike up the Mawenzi Ridge to approximately 4,200 m for stunning views of the Mawenzi Peak and the vast Saddle below. This 'climb high, sleep low' day is invaluable for altitude adaptation. Return to Horombo Hut for lunch and a relaxing afternoon.

Good to know: This extra day is the secret to higher summit success on the 6-day Marangu. The hike to 4,200 m and descent back to 3,720 m helps your body adapt to altitude without the fatigue of a full summit day.
5 Day

Horombo Hut → Kibo Hut

Today you cross the vast, desolate Saddle — a lunar landscape that stretches between Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. The trail climbs steadily across this high-altitude desert, where only the hardiest lichens survive. As you approach Kibo Hut (4,703 m), the massive bulk of Kibo's summit cone looms directly above. After an early dinner, your guide will brief you on the midnight summit attempt, and you'll rest until your 11 PM wake-up call.

What's included today: Stay at Kibo Hut (dormitory) · Meals: B / L / D
Good to know: Kibo Hut is basic — no running water and temperatures drop well below freezing at night. Eat a good dinner, hydrate, and organise your summit layers before resting.
6 Day

Summit Day — Kibo Hut → Uhuru Peak → Horombo Hut

Wake at 11 PM for hot tea and snacks, then step into the dark by midnight. Ascend the steep switchbacks of the normal route up the scree slope to Gilman's Point (5,681 m) on the crater rim — arriving in time for a spectacular sunrise. From Gilman's Point, follow the crater rim trail for another hour to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) — the Roof of Africa. Celebrate with photos and a moment of silence before starting the long descent back to Horombo Hut, where a warm meal and well-earned rest await.

What's included today: Stay at Horombo Hut (dormitory) · Meals: B / L / D
Good to know: Dress in all your warm layers — summit night temperatures fall to −20 °C with windchill. Carry your camera inside your jacket to keep batteries warm. The trail from Gilman's Point to Uhuru takes about an hour along the crater rim.
7 Day

Horombo Hut → Marangu Gate → Moshi (Overnight)

A triumphant descent through the moorland and rainforest you climbed in your first two days. The trail retraces the route through Horombo's giant heather fields, past Mandara Hut, and down the lush forest path to Marangu Gate. At the gate, you complete park formalities and receive your Kilimanjaro summit certificate — a proud moment commemorating your achievement. Your vehicle meets you for the drive back to Moshi, where a hot shower, cold drink, and a comfortable hotel bed await.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before your climb. Can't find your answer? Get in touch.

You should be able to walk 5–7 hours per day on consecutive days. No technical climbing skills are required, but good cardiovascular fitness and mental determination are essential. We recommend starting a fitness programme at least 8 weeks before your trek.
Success rates vary by route and duration. Longer itineraries (7–9 days) have higher success rates (85–95%) because they allow better acclimatisation. Our expert guides use proven strategies to maximise your chances.
Our guides carry pulse oximeters and emergency oxygen. They monitor your health daily. If symptoms become severe, immediate descent is arranged. Helicopter evacuation is available for emergencies (covered by your mandatory travel insurance).
Accommodation depends on the route. Marangu Route uses mountain huts (dormitory beds). All other routes use high-quality 4-season tents with 10 cm foam mattresses. Mess tents with tables and chairs are provided for meals.
The best months are January–March and June–October. These are the driest periods with the clearest views. The wettest months are April–May and November–December, though climbing is still possible.
No. Our porters carry your main luggage (up to 15 kg) between camps. You only carry a small daypack with water, snacks, camera, rain gear, and personal items.
Our cooks prepare three fresh meals daily: breakfast (porridge, eggs, toast, fruit), lunch (soup, main course, snacks), and dinner (main course, vegetables, dessert). Dietary requirements (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free) are accommodated with advance notice.
Limited. Signal is available at some lower camps but disappears above 4,000 m. Our guides carry satellite communication radios for emergencies. We recommend downloading offline maps and informing family of limited contact.
