What to Expect

The 7 Days Mawenzi & Uhuru Expedition is Kilimanjaro's most exclusive and adventurous route — designed for experienced trekkers and photographers seeking the remotest possible Kilimanjaro experience. Unlike any other route, this expedition traverses the eastern side of Mawenzi Peak (Kilimanjaro's second summit), descending into the normally restricted Mawenzi Cirque area before joining the standard route for the final summit push to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 m.

Trip Highlights

The only route exploring the remote Mawenzi Cirque — normally off-limits to climbers
Exclusive access to the eastern ice fields and volcanic formations of Mawenzi Peak
Mixed tented camping on ascent, huts on descent for comfort and adventure
Photography paradise — jagged pinnacles, glacial remnants, lunar landscapes
Sunrise summit at Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) via the eastern ice fields
~90% summit success rate with expert specialised guiding
Small groups of 1–8 for a truly remote wilderness experience

Day-by-Day Itinerary

01 Day

Marangu Gate → Rongai Gate → Simba Camp

After breakfast, drive from Moshi to Marangu Gate (1,870 m) for park registration. From here, continue by vehicle along a rough road to Rongai Gate (1,950 m), the official start point on the northern side of the mountain. The trek begins gently through cultivated farmland and open pine forest, following a wide track that gradually narrows as you ascend. The trail winds through a dry forest environment distinct from the rainforest on the southern routes, with views opening up behind you towards the Kenyan border. Reach Simba Camp (2,625 m), your first night's camp, nestled in a clearing surrounded by tall trees.

  • Drive to Rongai Gate via Marangu
  • Pine forest and farmland trails
  • Views towards the Kenyan border
  • First night in tents on the mountain
What you'll do: Short drive to the gate, then a gentle 3 – 4 h introductory hike to settle into the rhythm of the trail.
What's included today: Park fees, mountain crew support, all meals, tented camping equipment, drinking water, professional guides, and porter services.
Good to know: The northern slope is drier than the southern routes, so the forest here has a different character — more open and drier underfoot. The 'pole pole' pace starts today.
02 Day

Simba Camp → Kikelewa Cave

Leave the forest behind as the trail opens into beautiful bushland and low alpine scrub. The path climbs gently across the open northern slopes with expansive views stretching across the savannah towards Kenya. The vegetation transitions to giant heather and moorland plants as you gain altitude. Kikelewa Cave (3,630 m) is a sheltered camp positioned among giant boulders and rocky outcrops, offering a sense of remoteness you won't find on other routes. The afternoon light on the plains below is spectacular.

Good to know: This is one of the shortest trekking days on the itinerary — intentionally easy to help with acclimatisation. Enjoy the afternoon exploring the rocky surroundings and watching the sunset over the plains.
03 Day

Kikelewa Cave → Mawenzi Tarn Camp

A steeper day as you climb into the high alpine desert zone towards the dramatic jagged ridges of Mawenzi Peak. The trail ascends more sharply today, crossing rocky terrain with sparse vegetation. The reward is extraordinary — Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330 m) sits beside a small glacial lake at the base of Mawenzi Peak's immense east face. The setting is one of the most spectacular on any Kilimanjaro route, with the shattered summit ridge of Mawenzi reflecting in the dark waters of the tarn. Arrive early enough to explore the area and photograph the incredible rock formations.

  • Spectacular views of Mawenzi Peak

What you'll do: 3 – 4 h of steeper climbing, paced for the altitude gain. Soak in one of the most beautiful camp settings on Kilimanjaro.
What's included today: Stay at Mawenzi Tarn Camp (tented) · Meals: B / L / D
Good to know: At 4,330 m, you may feel the altitude tonight. Stay hydrated, eat what you can, and rest well. Tomorrow's Mawenzi Cirque exploration is the highlight of this expedition.
04 Day

Mawenzi Tarn → Mawenzi Cirque Exploration → Mawenzi Tarn

The signature day of the expedition — and the reason this route is unlike any other on Kilimanjaro. Today you venture into the normally restricted Mawenzi Cirque, a spectacular amphitheatre of jagged volcanic pinnacles, ancient glacial remnants, and lunar-like rock formations on the eastern flank of Mawenzi Peak. This area is off-limits to all standard routes and requires specialised guiding knowledge to access. Your expert guide will lead you through the cirque to approximately 4,800 m, navigating between towering rock spires and across ancient moraines. The photographic opportunities are unparalleled — the morning light catching the shattered ridges, the texture of the volcanic rock, and the stark beauty of this hidden world. After several hours of exploration, descend back to Mawenzi Tarn Camp for the night.

  • Exclusive Mawenzi Cirque exploration
  • Normally restricted area — special access
  • Jagged volcanic pinnacles and glacial remnants
  • Photography paradise at 4,800 m
  • 'Climb high, sleep low' acclimatisation benefit
What you'll do: 5 – 6 h of guided exploration through the Mawenzi Cirque — a unique experience that fewer than 2% of Kilimanjaro climbers ever enjoy. Descend back to camp for a well-earned rest.
What's included today: Stay at Mawenzi Tarn Camp (tented) · Meals: B / L / D · Exclusive Mawenzi Cirque guiding
Good to know: This is the highlight of the entire expedition. The Mawenzi Cirque is strictly protected and only accessible with experienced guides who know the terrain. The 'climb high, sleep low' pattern also provides excellent altitude adaptation for summit day.
05 Day

Mawenzi Tarn → Kibo Hut

Today you leave the dramatic Mawenzi landscape behind and traverse the upper alpine desert towards Kibo's massive volcanic cone. The trail crosses the vast Saddle — the high-altitude desert plateau between Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. This is the highest and most exposed section of the trek so far, with temperatures dropping well below freezing even during the day. Kibo Hut (4,703 m) is a basic stone dormitory perched on the lower slopes of Kibo's summit cone. After an early dinner, your guide will brief you on the midnight summit attempt, and you'll rest until your 11 PM wake-up call.

What's included today: Stay at Kibo Hut (dormitory) · Meals: B / L / D
Good to know: Kibo Hut is basic — no running water and temperatures drop well below freezing at night. Eat a good dinner, hydrate, and organise your summit layers before resting. Sleep by 6 PM if you can.
06 Day

Summit Day — Kibo Hut → Gilman's Point → Uhuru Peak → Horombo Hut

Wake at 11 PM for hot tea and snacks, then step into the dark by midnight. Ascend the steep switchbacks of the normal route up the scree slope to Gilman's Point (5,681 m) on the crater rim — arriving in time for a spectacular sunrise over the eastern ice fields that you explored two days earlier from the Mawenzi side. From Gilman's Point, follow the crater rim trail for another hour to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) — the Roof of Africa. Celebrate with photos and a moment of silence on top of Africa before starting the long descent via the normal route to Horombo Hut (3,720 m), where a warm meal and well-earned rest await in comfortable dormitory accommodation.

07 Day

Horombo Hut → Marangu Gate → Moshi (Overnight)

A triumphant descent through the moorland and rainforest. The trail passes through Horombo's giant heather fields, past Mandara Hut, and down the lush forest path to Marangu Gate. At the gate, you complete park formalities and receive your Kilimanjaro summit certificate — a proud moment commemorating your achievement on this unique expedition. Your vehicle meets you for the drive back to Moshi, where a hot shower, cold drink, and a comfortable hotel bed await.

You should be able to walk 5–7 hours per day on consecutive days. No technical climbing skills are required, but good cardiovascular fitness and mental determination are essential. We recommend starting a fitness programme at least 8 weeks before your trek.
Success rates vary by route and duration. Longer itineraries (7–9 days) have higher success rates (85–95%) because they allow better acclimatisation. Our expert guides use proven strategies to maximise your chances.
Our guides carry pulse oximeters and emergency oxygen. They monitor your health daily. If symptoms become severe, immediate descent is arranged. Helicopter evacuation is available for emergencies (covered by your mandatory travel insurance).
Accommodation depends on the route. Marangu Route uses mountain huts (dormitory beds). All other routes use high-quality 4-season tents with 10 cm foam mattresses. Mess tents with tables and chairs are provided for meals.
The best months are January–March and June–October. These are the driest periods with the clearest views. The wettest months are April–May and November–December, though climbing is still possible.
No. Our porters carry your main luggage (up to 15 kg) between camps. You only carry a small daypack with water, snacks, camera, rain gear, and personal items.
Our cooks prepare three fresh meals daily: breakfast (porridge, eggs, toast, fruit), lunch (soup, main course, snacks), and dinner (main course, vegetables, dessert). Dietary requirements (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free) are accommodated with advance notice.
Limited. Signal is available at some lower camps but disappears above 4,000 m. Our guides carry satellite communication radios for emergencies. We recommend downloading offline maps and informing family of limited contact.
