What to Expect

The 6 Days Umbwe Route offers 6 full days of trekking on Kilimanjaro's steepest and most direct ascent — a route that demands respect, fitness, and mental fortitude. Starting from Umbwe Gate (1,800 m) on the southern side of the mountain, the trail plunges into dense Colobus-monkey-filled rainforest and climbs relentlessly from the very first step. Unlike other routes that gain altitude gradually via long traverses, the Umbwe Route tackles the mountain head-on, ascending straight up the forested ridge between the Umbwe and Lonzo rivers. This uncompromising profile has earned it the nickname "the suicidal route" — not for danger, but for its punishing steepness.

Trip Highlights

Kilimanjaro's steepest and most direct route — the ultimate challenge
Start at Umbwe Gate (1,800 m) through dense pristine rainforest
Conquer the famous Barranco Wall — a thrilling scramble at 4,000 m+
Tented camping throughout — a pure wilderness experience
Sunrise summit at Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) via Stella Point
~75% summit success rate with expert guidance

Day-by-Day Itinerary

01 Day

Umbwe Gate → Umbwe Camp

After breakfast, drive from Moshi to Umbwe Gate (1,800 m) for park registration — approximately a 1.5-hour drive through farmland and forest. The trek begins immediately with a steep, relentless ascent through dense montane rainforest. The trail climbs the narrow ridge between the Umbwe and Lonzo rivers, shaded by towering tree ferns and ancient Podocarpus trees draped in moss. Colobus monkeys swing through the canopy, and the air is thick with humidity and the sound of birdsong. The gradient is unrelenting from the very start — this is the steepest first day of any Kilimanjaro route. Reach Umbwe Camp (2,950 m) in the afternoon, perched on the ridge amidst giant heather trees.

  • Drive to Umbwe Gate via forest roads
  • Steep rainforest ascent — the toughest Day 1 on the mountain
  • Colobus monkeys and lush vegetation
  • First night in tents at Umbwe Camp
What you'll do: 4 – 5 h of steep climbing through dense rainforest. Take it slow — "pole pole" — as the altitude gain is significant on this first day.
What's included today: Park fees, mountain crew support, all meals, tented camping equipment, drinking water, professional guides, and porter services.
Good to know: The Umbwe Route gains altitude faster than any other route on Day 1. This is by design — the steepness is what makes this route so direct. Stay well hydrated and listen to your guide's pacing.
02 Day

Umbwe Camp → Barranco Camp

Leave the dense forest behind as the trail emerges into open alpine meadows and moorland. The vegetation transitions from giant heather to the surreal landscape of groundsels and lobelias. This is the day the views open up dramatically — for the first time you will see the immense glacier-capped summit of Kibo rising above the southern ice fields. The trail traverses the upper slopes, contouring around the head of the Barranco Valley with breathtaking views of the Breach Wall and Heim Glacier. Descend slightly into the Barranco Valley to reach Barranco Camp (3,960 m), set in a sheltered spot surrounded by giant Senecio trees, directly beneath the imposing Barranco Wall.

  • Alpine meadow and moorland traverse
  • First clear views of Kibo's glaciers
  • Giant groundsels and lobelias
  • Camp beneath the Barranco Wall
What you'll do: 4 – 5 h of scenic trekking through the upper alpine zone, with plenty of photo stops as the views of Kibo unfold.
What's included today: Stay at Barranco Camp (tented) · Meals: B / L / D
Good to know: Barranco Camp is one of the most photogenic camps on the mountain. The afternoon light on the Barranco Wall is stunning. Rest well — tomorrow you climb that wall.
03 Day

Barranco Camp → Karanga Camp

Today features the most exhilarating section of the entire trek — the ascent of the Barranco Wall. This is not a technical climb, but a steep scramble up a 270 m cliff face that requires using your hands for balance on the volcanic rock. The wall looks intimidating from camp but the route finds a manageable line with good holds. Your guide will lead you up slowly and safely. Once atop the wall, the views are staggering — Kibo's southern glaciers, the Breach Wall, and the entire Barranco Valley below. From the top, the trail traverses the upper alpine desert, dipping into the Karanga Valley and climbing back out to reach Karanga Camp (3,995 m), the last camp before summit base.

MealsB / L / D
  • Conquer the Barranco Wall — the most famous scramble on Kilimanjaro
  • Panoramic summit views from the top
  • Alpine desert traverse through Karanga Valley
  • Last camp before Barafu base camp
What you'll do: 4 – 5 h of trekking including the thrilling Barranco Wall scramble, then traverse to Karanga Camp. One of the most memorable days on the mountain.
What's included today: Stay at Karanga Camp (tented) · Meals: B / L / D
Good to know: The Barranco Wall looks much harder than it is. Take your time, place your feet carefully, and follow your guide's directions. The scramble is a highlight, not a danger — thousands climb it safely every year.
04 Day

Karanga Camp → Barafu Camp

A shorter but challenging day as you climb out of the Karanga Valley and ascend across the upper alpine desert towards Barafu Camp, your summit base. The trail traverses rocky scree slopes with sparse vegetation — the landscape is lunar, barren, and exposed. The gradient steepens as you approach Barafu, with the summit pyramid of Kibo growing larger with every step. Barafu Camp (4,673 m) is perched on a rocky ridge with dizzying views down to the plains far below. After an early dinner, your guide will brief you on the midnight summit attempt. Rest early — you will be woken at 11 PM to prepare for the most important day of the trek.

  • Ascent across alpine desert scree slopes
  • Lunar landscape with views of Kibo summit pyramid
  • Arrival at Barafu — highest camp at 4,673 m

What you'll do: 4 – 5 h of steady ascent across the alpine desert to Barafu Camp, then prepare gear and rest for the midnight summit push.
What's included today: Stay at Barafu Camp (tented) · Meals: B / L / D
Good to know: Barafu means "ice" in Swahili — and it lives up to its name. Winds can be fierce and temperatures plummet after sunset. Organise your summit layers in advance and try to eat a good dinner despite the nerves.
05 Day

Summit Day — Barafu Camp → Stella Point → Uhuru Peak → Mweka Camp

Wake at 11 PM for hot tea and snacks, then step into the dark by midnight. Ascend the steep scree slope towards the crater rim in single file, headlamps bobbing in the darkness. The climb is relentless — six hours of slow, grinding ascent up loose volcanic scree at high altitude. Reach Stella Point (5,756 m) on the crater rim just as the first light of dawn touches the horizon — a moment of pure magic. From Stella Point, follow the crater rim trail for approximately one hour to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) — the Roof of Africa. Celebrate with photos and a moment on top of Africa before beginning the descent. The long descent takes you back through Barafu Camp to pick up supplies, then continues down the scree and moorland to Mweka Camp (3,100 m), where a warm meal and a well-earned rest await in the heart of the rainforest.

What's included today: Stay at Mweka Camp (tented) · Meals: B / L / D
Good to know: Dress in all your warm layers — summit night temperatures fall to -20 °C with windchill. Carry your camera inside your jacket to keep batteries warm. The trail from Stella Point to Uhuru takes about an hour along the crater rim.
06 Day

Mweka Camp → Mweka Gate → Moshi (Overnight)

A triumphant descent through the lush montane rainforest. The trail winds through the dense canopy, past giant ferns, moss-covered trees, and occasional sightings of colobus monkeys. The sounds of the forest birds replace the silence of the alpine zone as you drop lower through the vegetation zones. At Mweka Gate (1,640 m), you complete park formalities and receive your Kilimanjaro summit certificate — a proud moment commemorating your achievement. Your vehicle meets you for the drive back to Moshi, where a hot shower, cold drink, and a comfortable hotel bed await.

You should be able to walk 5–7 hours per day on consecutive days. No technical climbing skills are required, but good cardiovascular fitness and mental determination are essential. We recommend starting a fitness programme at least 8 weeks before your trek.
Success rates vary by route and duration. Longer itineraries (7–9 days) have higher success rates (85–95%) because they allow better acclimatisation. Our expert guides use proven strategies to maximise your chances.
Our guides carry pulse oximeters and emergency oxygen. They monitor your health daily. If symptoms become severe, immediate descent is arranged. Helicopter evacuation is available for emergencies (covered by your mandatory travel insurance).
Accommodation depends on the route. Marangu Route uses mountain huts (dormitory beds). All other routes use high-quality 4-season tents with 10 cm foam mattresses. Mess tents with tables and chairs are provided for meals.
The best months are January–March and June–October. These are the driest periods with the clearest views. The wettest months are April–May and November–December, though climbing is still possible.
No. Our porters carry your main luggage (up to 15 kg) between camps. You only carry a small daypack with water, snacks, camera, rain gear, and personal items.
Our cooks prepare three fresh meals daily: breakfast (porridge, eggs, toast, fruit), lunch (soup, main course, snacks), and dinner (main course, vegetables, dessert). Dietary requirements (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free) are accommodated with advance notice.
Limited. Signal is available at some lower camps but disappears above 4,000 m. Our guides carry satellite communication radios for emergencies. We recommend downloading offline maps and informing family of limited contact.
