Overview

Mikumi National Park is Tanzania's fourth largest national park, covering 3,230 km² in the heart of the country's southern highlands. Established in 1964, it forms part of the larger Selous-Niassa ecosystem and is often referred to as the "Little Serengeti" due to its wide-open flood plains that closely resemble the famous Serengeti ecosystem.

One of Mikumi's greatest advantages is its accessibility. Located just a 3–4 hour drive from Dar es Salaam along the main highway to Zambia, it is the closest major national park to Tanzania's largest city. This makes it perfect for short safari breaks, weekend getaways, and travellers who want a genuine safari experience without the time and expense of flying to more remote parks.

Despite its proximity to the city, Mikumi delivers a surprisingly rich wildlife experience. The park's Mkata Flood Plains form the heart of the ecosystem, attracting vast herds of grazers and the predators that follow them. The landscape varies from open grassland and woodland to rocky hills and riverine forest, supporting a diverse range of species.

Wildlife

Mikumi supports a healthy population of large mammals. Elephants are commonly seen browsing along the park's woodland edges and crossing the flood plains in family groups. Giraffes are abundant, and their elegant silhouettes against the open sky make for iconic safari photographs. Zebras, wildebeest, and buffalo graze on the Mkata Flood Plains in large numbers.

The park's predator populations are significant. Lions are regularly spotted resting under acacia trees or hunting on the open plains. Leopards inhabit the denser riverine areas, though they are more elusive. Cheetahs occasionally visit the flood plains, and spotted hyenas are active both day and night. The rare black rhino has been spotted in the park, though sightings are uncommon.

With over 400 bird species recorded, Mikumi is a haven for birdwatchers. The park's varied habitats support everything from large raptors like the bateleur and martial eagle to colourful species like the lilac-breasted roller and the yellow-throated longclaw. Water birds are abundant around the park's seasonal wetlands.

Mkata Flood Plains

The Mkata Flood Plains are Mikumi's signature feature. These vast open grasslands are reminiscent of the Serengeti, attracting large herds of wildebeest, zebra, and other grazers, particularly during the dry season. Game drives across the plains offer panoramic views and excellent opportunities for photography, especially during the golden hours of sunrise and sunset.

Budget-Friendly Safari

Mikumi is one of the most budget-friendly major national parks in Tanzania. Park fees are lower than the northern circuit parks, and the range of accommodation options — from basic campsites to mid-range lodges and luxury tented camps — means there is something for every budget. The short drive from Dar es Salaam also eliminates the cost of internal flights, making Mikumi an excellent value option.

For travellers on a tight schedule or budget, Mikumi can be visited on a day trip from Dar es Salaam, though an overnight stay is strongly recommended to make the most of the wildlife viewing. Two to three days is ideal for exploring the park's key areas.

Day Trips from Dar es Salaam

Thanks to its proximity to Dar es Salaam, Mikumi is one of the few major parks in Tanzania that can be visited on a day trip. However, we recommend at least one or two nights to properly experience the park. Early morning and late afternoon game drives offer the best wildlife viewing, and these are impossible to fit into a single-day visit.

For those with limited time, a two-day, one-night safari from Dar es Salaam is a popular option. This allows for an afternoon game drive on arrival, a full day of game viewing on day two, and a return to Dar by evening. It is a perfect introduction to Tanzania's wildlife for first-time visitors.

Lodges and Accommodation

Mikumi offers a good range of accommodation options. The Mkata Safari Camp provides comfortable tented accommodation in a bush setting. Vuma Hills Tented Camp offers more upscale tented rooms with views over the flood plains. For budget travellers, the Tanapa rest house and public campsites provide basic but functional facilities. Several luxury tented camps have opened in recent years, catering to visitors who want more comfort without leaving the bush.

Best Time to Visit

Mikumi can be visited year-round. The dry season from June to October offers the best general game viewing, as animals concentrate around the remaining water sources and the vegetation is less dense. The green season from November to May brings lush landscapes and excellent birdwatching, though some roads may become challenging after heavy rain.
