What to Expect

The Lake Chala Day Trip is a full-day adventure to one of Tanzania's most spectacular hidden gems — a pristine volcanic crater lake nestled in the mountains on the Tanzanian-Kenyan border, just 30 kilometres east of Moshi. Lake Chala sits in the caldera of an extinct volcano, its crystal-clear waters shifting from deep sapphire blue to emerald green depending on the time of day and the angle of the sun.

Unlike the crowded tourist lakes of the Northern Circuit, Lake Chala remains virtually unknown to mass tourism. The lake has no visible inlet or outlet — its water is fed entirely by underground springs flowing from Mount Kilimanjaro's volcanic aquifers, making it one of the purest bodies of water in East Africa. The crater walls rise steeply from the lakeshore, covered in dense tropical forest alive with birds, butterflies, and the occasional flash of a colobus monkey's white tail.

The lake is home to a small population of hippos and crocodiles, which are most often seen basking on the far shore in the early morning. Over 200 bird species have been recorded here, including fish eagles, kingfishers, and the vibrant malachite sunbird. The surrounding forest is home to blue monkeys, vervet monkeys, and a remarkable diversity of plant life.

Your day at Lake Chala includes a scenic drive through the Kilimanjaro foothills, a guided nature walk along the crater rim with panoramic views, optional canoeing on the crystal-clear water, and a relaxing afternoon at the lakeside campsite. This is the perfect escape for travellers seeking a unique, uncrowded experience in one of Tanzania's most beautiful natural settings.

Trip Itinerary

2 Stop

8:15 AM — Arrive at Lake Chala & Morning Activity

Arrive at the Lake Chala campsite on the crater rim. Take in the breathtaking first view of the lake — a vast expanse of crystal-clear water nestled deep within the volcanic crater, its colour shifting from deep blue to emerald green as the morning light changes angle. The crater walls rise steeply on all sides, covered in dense tropical forest. Your guide provides a safety briefing and introduces the day's activities. Choose between a guided crater rim walk (approximately 2 hours, moderate difficulty) or a more relaxed lakeshore stroll.

3 Stop

9:00 AM — Crater Rim Walk & Bird Watching

Follow your guide along the crater rim trail, which winds through dense forest and along the edge of the crater wall. The trail offers ever-changing views of the lake below and, on clear days, panoramic vistas across the Kenyan plains to the distant peaks of Mount Kenya. Stop at key birding spots — the forest canopy is alive with sunbirds, turacos, and hornbills. Your guide points out medicinal plants, giant tree ferns, and the tracks of blue monkeys that inhabit the forest. The rim walk is approximately 5 km and involves moderate elevation changes.

4 Stop

11:00 AM — Canoeing on Lake Chala

Descend to the lakeshore and prepare for an unforgettable canoeing experience on the crystal-clear water. Paddle across the calm surface, marvelling at the transparency of the water — you can see fish swimming several metres below your canoe. The lake is approximately 3 km long and 1 km wide, giving you plenty of space to explore. Your guide accompanies you in a separate canoe, pointing out hippos resting in the reeds (maintaining a safe distance) and scanning the shoreline for crocodiles. Canoeing is gentle and suitable for all fitness levels.

5 Stop

12:30 PM — Packed Lunch at the Lakeside

Return to the campsite for a freshly prepared packed lunch at the lakeside. Enjoy sandwiches, fruit, snacks, and cold drinks while overlooking the stunning crater lake. The afternoon sun brings out the deepest colours in the water — a mesmerising turquoise that photographs beautifully. Hippos may be visible on the far shore, and fish eagles circle overhead. Your guide reviews the morning's wildlife sightings and shares the history of the Lake Chala area.

6 Stop

1:30 PM — Swimming & Free Time

After lunch, enjoy free time at the lakeside. Swim in the designated safe zone — the water is refreshing and crystal clear, though cool due to the lake's depth and underground spring feed. Alternatively, relax in a hammock at the campsite, explore the lakeshore on your own, or continue bird watching from the campsite hide. The afternoon is yours to enjoy at your own pace.

7 Stop

3:00 PM — Depart Lake Chala & Return to Hotel

Gather your belongings and begin the scenic return drive to Moshi. The late afternoon light transforms the landscape — golden savannah, silhouetted acacia trees, and on clear days the massive bulk of Kilimanjaro glowing pink in the sunset. Your guide points out roadside birds and animals as you drive. Arrive back at your Moshi hotel by approximately 4:00 PM, leaving you with the rest of the afternoon free.
