Kilimanjaro Marangu Route: Complete Guide

June 8, 2026 9 min read Bush Lion Tours

The Marangu Route is the oldest and most established path on Mount Kilimanjaro. Often called the "Coca-Cola Route" because it was the first route to be developed and was historically sponsored by Coca-Cola, it remains one of the most popular choices for climbers — especially first-timers. The route is the only one on Kilimanjaro that offers hut accommodation instead of camping, which gives it a significant comfort advantage.

Overview

The Marangu Route approaches Kilimanjaro from the southeast, starting at the Marangu Gate on the eastern side of the mountain. It follows a well-maintained trail through five distinct ecological zones: cultivation, rainforest, heath and moorland, alpine desert, and Arctic summit. The route is direct and relatively straightforward, with no technical sections and no scrambling required.

The Marangu Route is typically completed in 5 days, though 6-day itineraries are recommended for better acclimatization and higher summit success rates. The route is an out-and-back path — you ascend and descend using the same trail, which means you pass through the same scenery twice.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut (2,700 m)

Drive from Moshi to Marangu Gate (about 45 minutes). Register with park authorities and begin hiking through dense tropical rainforest. The trail is wide, well-graded, and shaded by giant trees draped in moss. After 3–4 hours of gentle hiking, you arrive at Mandara Hut, a cluster of wooden huts at 2,700 metres. The afternoon is free for rest or a short walk to the Maundi Crater viewpoint.

Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut (3,720 m)

Leave the rainforest behind and enter the heath and moorland zone. The trail climbs steadily through open moorland with giant heather and lobelia plants. Views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks appear ahead. Arrive at Horombo Hut, a larger settlement of huts with a dining area. This is a key acclimatization point — on the 6-day itinerary, you spend an extra night here.

Day 3: Horombo Hut — Acclimatization Day (6-day itinerary)

If doing the 6-day route, today is a rest and acclimatization day. You hike up towards Mawenzi Hut (4,330 m) for views and then return to Horombo. This "climb high, sleep low" strategy significantly improves your chances of reaching the summit. On the 5-day itinerary, you skip this day and proceed directly to Kibo Hut.

Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut (4,700 m)

Cross the saddle — a wide, barren stretch of alpine desert between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The landscape is stark and otherworldly, with volcanic rock and very little vegetation. Arrive at Kibo Hut, a basic stone hut at 4,700 metres. Eat an early dinner and try to sleep before the midnight summit start. The atmosphere at Kibo is tense and exciting — everyone knows what lies ahead.

Day 5: Summit Day — Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) to Horombo Hut (3,720 m)

Wake at 11:00 PM for the summit push. Hike by headlamp through scree and volcanic ash to Gillman's Point (5,681 m) on the crater rim, then along the rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) — the highest point in Africa. Arrive at sunrise. Descend to Kibo Hut for breakfast, then continue down to Horombo Hut for the night.

Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

Descend through the moorland and rainforest zones back to Marangu Gate. Collect your summit certificate and transfer to Moshi.

Success Rate

The Marangu Route has a summit success rate of approximately 75–80% on the 5-day itinerary and 85%+ on the 6-day itinerary. The difference is significant — the extra acclimatization day at Horombo Hut makes a measurable impact. We strongly recommend the 6-day version for anyone who can spare the extra day.

Accommodation: The Hut Advantage

The Marangu Route is the only Kilimanjaro route with hut accommodation. The huts are simple wooden structures with bunk beds and communal dining areas. You do not need to carry a tent or sleeping mat. The huts provide shelter from wind and rain, which can be a significant comfort advantage during the rainy seasons.

However, the huts are basic — there is no heating, no electricity (bring a headlamp), and toilet facilities are shared squat toilets. During peak season, the huts can be crowded with multiple groups sharing the same space.

Pros and Cons

Why Choose Marangu

The Marangu Route is ideal for first-time Kilimanjaro climbers who want a straightforward, well-marked trail with hut accommodation. It is the shortest route, the most affordable, and offers the option of a 5-day climb for those on a tight schedule. The huts are a welcome comfort after long days of hiking.

Why Consider Another Route

The Marangu Route's main drawback is that it is the busiest route on the mountain. During peak season (July–October, December–February), the huts are crowded and the trail feels congested. The route also traverses less diverse scenery compared to Machame or Lemosho, since you ascend and descend the same way. The 5-day itinerary has a lower success rate due to limited acclimatization time.

Best For Whom

The Marangu Route is best suited for:

Cost

The Marangu Route is generally the most affordable Kilimanjaro route. Park fees are slightly lower than camping routes (hut fees vs. camping fees), and the shorter duration reduces guide and porter costs. At Bush Lion Tours, our 5-day Marangu climb starts at $2,190 per person in a group of 6+, and our 6-day itinerary starts at $2,490 per person. Private climbs are available on request.

The Marangu Route is not the easiest route because it is "easy" — no Kilimanjaro route is easy. It is the most accessible, the most affordable, and the most straightforward. For many climbers, that combination is exactly what they need.

Final Thoughts

The Marangu Route earned its popularity for good reasons: it works, it is comfortable, and it gets you to the top. While it may lack the scenic drama of Machame or the exclusivity of Lemosho, it delivers a solid Kilimanjaro experience with the bonus of hut accommodation. If you choose the 6-day itinerary, you give yourself an excellent chance of reaching Uhuru Peak.
