The Machame Route is the most popular Kilimanjaro route, and for good reason. Known as the "Whisky Route" — named after the Scotsman who first guided climbers on this path — Machame offers the best combination of scenery, acclimatization, and challenge on the mountain. It is the route we recommend most often at Bush Lion Tours, and it delivers a summit success rate of 82–85% when done over 6 or 7 days.

Overview

The Machame Route approaches Kilimanjaro from the southwest, starting at Machame Gate on the southern flank of the mountain. Unlike the Marangu Route, Machame is a camping route — you sleep in tents at designated campsites along the trail. The route traverses five ecological zones and includes the famous Barranco Wall, a short but exhilarating scramble that is one of the highlights of any Kilimanjaro climb.

Machame is typically completed in 6 or 7 days. The 7-day itinerary is strongly recommended because it includes an extra acclimatization day that significantly increases your chances of reaching the summit.

Scenery Highlights
Rainforest Canopy Lush tropical forest on day one with colobus monkeys
Shira Plateau Vast high-altitude plateau with panoramic views
Lava Tower Dramatic volcanic plug at 4,630m
Barranco Wall The most exciting scramble on any route
Glacier Views Close-up views of Kibo's glaciers from Karanga
Alpine Desert Stark volcanic landscape near Barafu Camp

Day-by-Day Itinerary

1
1 Machame Gate to Machame Camp
3,010m — Through the rainforest canopy

Drive from Moshi to Machame Gate (about 45 minutes). Begin hiking through lush tropical rainforest on a wide, well-maintained trail. The forest is dense and humid, with giant trees, ferns, and colobus monkeys visible in the canopy. After 5–6 hours of steady climbing, arrive at Machame Camp in the heath zone, where you break out above the treeline.

Rainforest 5–6 hrs 11 km
2
2 Machame Camp to Shira Camp
3,840m — Enter the Shira Plateau

Cross the heath and moorland zone, climbing steadily towards the Shira Plateau. The landscape opens up dramatically — giant heather, lobelia, and groundsels replace the forest, and views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks appear ahead. Arrive at Shira Camp on the edge of the vast Shira Plateau, one of the highest plateaus in Africa.

Moorland 5–6 hrs 5 km
3
3 Shira Camp to Barranco Camp
4,630m → 3,960m — Lava Tower and descent

Today is a long but spectacular day. Cross the Shira Plateau and climb towards Lava Tower (4,630 m), a dramatic volcanic rock formation. Descend from Lava Tower into the Barranco Valley, passing through alpine desert and across the Barranco Glacier moraine. This "climb high, sleep low" profile is excellent for acclimatization.

Lava Tower 7–8 hrs 10 km
4
4 Barranco Camp — Acclimatization Day
~4,200m — Climb high, sleep low

On the 7-day itinerary, today is spent acclimatizing around Barranco Camp. You hike up towards the Barranco Wall for practice scrambling and return to camp. This extra day is the single biggest factor in Machame's high success rate. On the 6-day itinerary, you skip this day and proceed directly to Karanga Camp.

Acclimatization 3–4 hrs Practice scramble
5
5 Barranco Wall to Karanga Camp
4,035m — The famous Barranco Wall

The highlight of the Machame Route: the Barranco Wall. This 250-metre rock scramble requires using your hands and feet to climb up the steep face. It is not technically difficult, but it is exhilarating and requires focus. Your guides will coach you through every section. After conquering the wall, traverse along the southern flank of Kibo to Karanga Camp, with stunning views of the glaciers above.

Rock Scramble 4–5 hrs 5 km
6
6 Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
4,640m — Base camp for summit push

Climb steadily through alpine desert to Barafu Camp, the base camp for the summit push. The terrain is barren and exposed, with little vegetation. Arrive by mid-afternoon, eat an early dinner, and try to rest before the midnight summit start. Barafu sits on a narrow ridge with dramatic views of Mawenzi peak and the Tanzanian plains far below.

Base Camp 4–5 hrs 4 km
7
7 Summit Day — Uhuru Peak & Descent
5,895m → 3,100m — The Roof of Africa

Wake at 11:00 PM for the summit push. Hike by headlamp through scree to Stella Point and then along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak. Arrive at sunrise. Descend to Barafu for breakfast, then continue down the steep Mweka Trail through scree and into the rainforest to Mweka Camp. The descent is long and hard on the knees — trekking poles are essential.

Sunrise Summit 14–16 hrs Uhuru Peak
8
8 Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
1,800m — Final descent through forest

Descend through the rainforest to Mweka Gate. Collect your summit certificate and transfer to Moshi.

Non-Technical

The Barranco Wall is a 250-metre rock face that requires scrambling using your hands and feet. It is not a technical climb — no ropes or harnesses are needed — but it demands confidence, balance, and a head for heights. Most climbers find it thrilling rather than frightening. Your guides will be ahead of you, showing handholds and footholds, and there are always porters nearby who do this every week.
