Barafu Camp: Your Last
Stop Before the Summit

May 20, 2026 8 min read Bush Lion Tours

Barafu Camp is the final base camp before the summit on five of Kilimanjaro's seven routes. Sitting at 4,640 metres on a barren volcanic ridge, it is the most exposed and inhospitable camp on the mountain. "Barafu" means "ice" in Swahili — and the camp lives up to its name.

What to Expect at Barafu Camp

Barafu sits on a narrow ridge with virtually no vegetation. The ground is volcanic rock and scree, completely exposed to the elements. There are no trees, no shelter, and no protection from the wind. The landscape is starkly lunar — red and black volcanic rock stretching in every direction, with the summit cone of Kibo towering above.

At 4,640 metres, the air contains roughly half the oxygen found at sea level. Breathing is difficult, even at rest. Simple tasks like putting on boots or zipping up a jacket can leave you gasping.

Camp Facilities

Barafu is a basic camp with minimal facilities. No permanent structures — everything is temporary, brought up by porters.

The Day-by-Day Timeline

1 PM – 3 PM

Arrival at Barafu

Arrive tired from Karanga Camp. Guide directs you to your tent. Rest immediately — do not explore or socialize.

3 PM – 5 PM

Rest & Hydrate

Eat as much as possible even if appetite is suppressed. Drink 2+ litres of water. Porter brings tea and snacks.

5 PM

Early Dinner

Simple, calorie-dense meal: soup, rice/pasta, bread, hot drinks. Designed for easy digestion and energy.

6 PM – 10 PM

Attempt to Sleep

Rest your body even if you cannot sleep. Headaches, nausea, and restless breathing are normal. Do not expect more than 1–2 hours of actual sleep.

10 PM

Wake Up & Dress

Wake at -10°C to -15°C. Dress in warmest layers: thermal base, fleece, down jacket, windproof shell, hat, gloves, balaclava.

11 PM – Midnight

Summit Departure

Begin the 4–7 hour climb to Uhuru Peak. Steep, rocky trail. Total darkness. Extreme cold. This is the hardest physical challenge of the climb.

🥶

Summit Night Temperature Guide

Temperatures range from -10°C to -20°C at night, with wind chill making it feel even colder. Wind speeds of 30–50 km/h are common on the exposed summit ridge. This combination of extreme cold, high altitude, and physical exertion makes this one of the most challenging environments you will ever experience.

What to Bring to the Summit

🔦

Headlamp

Fresh batteries essential. Your only light source in total darkness for 4–7 hours.

💧

Water (2 litres)

Carried inside your jacket to prevent freezing. Sip regularly throughout the climb.

🍫

High-Energy Snacks

Nuts, chocolate, energy bars. Quick calories when you need them most.

🧥

Warmest Layers

Thermal base, fleece, down jacket, windproof shell, hat, gloves, balaclava.

☀️

Sun Protection

Sunglasses and sunscreen for the descent when the sun rises.

🏥

Small First Aid Kit

Pain relief, blister treatment, personal medications.

The Descent Through Barafu

After summiting, you descend back through Barafu Camp on your way to Mweka Camp (3,100m). Your porter will have packed up your tent and main bag, so you only need to collect any remaining items and continue descending. Most climbers pass through without stopping — the lower altitude of Mweka is more comfortable for sleeping.

Tips for Your Time at Barafu

01

Arrive & Rest Immediately

Do not explore or socialize. Save every ounce of energy for the summit.

02

Eat & Drink More

Even if appetite is suppressed, your body needs fuel. Force yourself to eat and drink.

03

Rest Even If You Can't Sleep

Lying still with eyes closed is as restful as actual sleep at this altitude.

04

Organise Summit Gear

Keep headlamp, layers, and water accessible. Do not search in the dark at midnight.

Barafu Camp is the hardest night of the entire Kilimanjaro experience, but it is also the gateway to the summit. With proper preparation, the right gear, and a positive mindset, you will get through it and stand on the roof of Africa at dawn.
