8-Day Mara River Great Migration Safari — Northern Serengeti

After breakfast, depart Arusha and drive to Tarangire National Park — known as the Land of Giants. This park is famous for its ancient baobab trees, some over 1,000 years old, and for having the largest elephant herds in northern Tanzania. During the dry season, hundreds of elephants gather along the Tarangire River. You will also spot lions, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, and over 550 bird species. Enjoy a picnic lunch inside the park, then continue with afternoon game drives before heading to your lodge in Karatu.

After an early breakfast, drive through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area with a stop at the crater rim for breathtaking views. Continue across the conservation area, passing Maasai villages and vast open plains, before entering Serengeti National Park from the south. The Serengeti is truly spectacular — famous for its endless golden grasslands and incredible wildlife density. Enjoy afternoon game drives en route to your camp in Central Serengeti.

After breakfast, drive north through the Serengeti toward the Mara River region. The landscape changes as you move north — rolling hills, riverine forests, and rocky outcrops replace the endless plains. This is where the Great Migration gathers between August and October. Over two million wildebeest, hundreds of thousands of zebras, and antelopes congregate here, preparing for the perilous river crossing. Enjoy game drives en route to your camp in the Northern Serengeti.

Today is the highlight of your safari — a full day in the Northern Serengeti watching the Mara River crossing. The Mara River cuts through the landscape, creating the stage for one of nature greatest spectacles. Wildebeest and zebras gather on the river banks, hesitating before plunging into the crocodile-infested waters. On the other side, lions, hyenas, leopards, and cheetahs wait with growling stomachs. The crossing is unpredictable — it can happen at any time — so your guide will position you at the best viewing spots. This is a life-changing experience.

After breakfast, enjoy a final morning game drive in the Northern Serengeti, searching for any last migration activity. Then begin your journey south through the Serengeti, with game drives en route. Every day in the Serengeti is different, and you may encounter new wildlife as you move through different areas. Arrive at your camp in Central Serengeti for dinner.

After breakfast, enjoy a final morning game drive through the Serengeti as you wind your way toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Arrive at the Ngorongoro Crater — a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The crater was formed when a massive volcano exploded and collapsed on itself 2-3 million years ago. Descend 610 metres into the caldera for a half-day game drive. The crater shelters over 25,000 animals including the endangered black rhino, large lion prides, elephants, flamingos, and more than 500 bird species. After the game drive, ascend the crater wall and drive to your lodge in Karatu.

After breakfast, drive to Lake Manyara National Park — a compact but incredibly diverse park nestled at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment. The park is famous for its tree-climbing lions, vast flocks of flamingos (seasonal), and thick evergreen groundwater forest where baboons and elephants roam. Enjoy a morning game drive along the lakeshore and through the forest, with a picnic lunch inside the park. After the game drive, transfer to Arusha, Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), or Arusha Airport for your departure.
