Rongai Route
Kilimanjaro Climb
The Rongai Route approaches Kilimanjaro from the northern side near the Kenya border — the driest and quietest route on the mountain. With gentle terrain, remote wilderness, and wildlife sightings, it's the perfect choice for those seeking solitude and a high success rate.
Route Summary
Why Choose the Rongai Route?
The Rongai Route is Kilimanjaro's best-kept secret — the driest and quietest approach on the entire mountain. Starting from the northern side near the Kenya border, this route sees far fewer trekkers than the popular southern routes, offering a truly remote wilderness experience.
Because it approaches from the rain shadow side of Kilimanjaro, Rongai receives significantly less rainfall than routes like Machame or Lemosho. This means clearer skies, drier trails, and better visibility — especially during the peak climbing months.
The gradual ascent profile makes Rongai one of the easiest routes physically, yet it still delivers an impressive 96% summit success rate. The gentle terrain, combined with remote campsites and the chance to spot wildlife including elephants, makes this an exceptional choice for trekkers who value tranquility and natural beauty over crowded trails.
Rongai Route Itinerary
A detailed 7-day trek approaching Kilimanjaro from the north
Begin your Rongai adventure at Nalemoru Gate on the northern side of Kilimanjaro. Trek through lush rainforest on a gentle trail, passing through dense vegetation with occasional wildlife sightings. Reach Simba Camp as the forest canopy thins and views begin to open up.
Continue ascending through the moorland zone where giant heathers and groundsel trees replace the forest. The trail follows a gradual path with excellent views of Kibo and the eastern ice fields. Arrive at Second Cave with time to rest and acclimatize.
A shorter trekking day allowing for proper acclimatization. Traverse through open moorland with stunning views of Mawenzi Peak. The gentle terrain and relatively low altitude gain make this an excellent day to rest and enjoy the remote wilderness atmosphere.
Ascend into the alpine desert zone as you approach Mawenzi Tarn, one of the most scenic campsites on Kilimanjaro. The trail passes through sparse vegetation with dramatic rocky terrain. Mawenzi Tarn sits beneath the towering Mawenzi Peak offering spectacular sunset views.
Cross the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks through barren alpine desert. The terrain is flat but exposed, with panoramic views in every direction. Arrive at Kibo Hut early afternoon, eat a hearty meal, hydrate well, and rest before the midnight summit attempt.
SUMMIT DAY. Begin the midnight ascent up the scree slope toward Gillman's Point (5,681m), then continue along the crater rim to Stella Point (5,756m) and finally Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — the Roof of Africa! Watch the sunrise over the clouds before descending to Mweka Camp. The most challenging and rewarding day.
Descend through the rainforest to Mweka Gate. Celebrate your achievement with your crew and receive your summit certificate. Transfer back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha. A triumphant finish to an incredible Rongai adventure.
