Why Choose Lemosho?

The Most Scenic Route on Kilimanjaro

The Lemosho Route is widely regarded as the best all-around route on Kilimanjaro. It offers unmatched scenery as it traverses five distinct ecological zones — from lush rainforest to the barren alpine desert of the summit — and features a strategic acclimatization day at the Lava Tower, giving climbers the highest chance of reaching Uhuru Peak.

Unlike the crowded Marangu and Machame routes, Lemosho starts on the remote western side of the mountain with very few other groups. The trail merges with Machame at Shira Camp, allowing you to enjoy solitude before joining the main corridor. This route is ideal for first-time trekkers and experienced hikers alike.

Lemosho Route Itinerary

The classic 8-day Lemosho itinerary with full acclimatization via Lava Tower, giving you the best chance of summit success.

1
Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp
2,100m → 2,750m 7 km 3-4 hours

Begin your Kilimanjaro journey at Londorossi Gate (2,100m) on the western slope. Trek through pristine montane rainforest teeming with birds, colobus monkeys, and exotic flora. The trail winds through dense canopy before reaching Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,750m) in a clearing surrounded by giant trees.

Rainforest Wildlife Gentle Start
2
Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp
2,750m → 3,500m 8 km 5-6 hours

Continue ascending through the rainforest zone, which gradually transitions into heath and moorland. Enjoy views of the Shira Plateau opening up ahead. Pass through giant heather and lobelia plants as you reach Shira 1 Camp on the edge of the plateau.

3
Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp
3,500m → 3,900m 7 km 4-5 hours

Cross the expansive Shira Plateau, one of the largest high-altitude plateaus in the world. The terrain is relatively flat with stunning views of Kibo Peak and the Western Breach. This is an important acclimatization day as you gain altitude gradually across the plateau.

4
Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
3,900m → 4,630m → 3,950m 10 km 6-7 hours

The most critical acclimatization day. Ascend to the Lava Tower (4,630m), a dramatic volcanic rock formation, gaining valuable altitude before descending to Barranco Camp (3,950m). This "climb high, sleep low" strategy is the key to Lemosho's exceptional 95% summit success rate.

5
Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
3,950m → 4,000m 5 km 4-5 hours

Tackle the famous Barranco Wall — a thrilling scramble with fixed ropes that rewards you with incredible views. Traverse the southern flank of Kilimanjaro through alpine desert landscape to reach Karanga Camp, the last camp with reliable water supply before the summit push.

6
Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
4,000m → 4,640m 5 km 4-5 hours

Ascend through barren alpine desert to Barafu Camp (4,640m), the base camp for the summit attempt. Arrive by early afternoon to rest and hydrate. Prepare your gear for the midnight summit start. Early to bed — the biggest day of your climb begins in a few hours.

Summit Prep Alpine Desert Early Rest
7
Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
4,640m → 5,895m → 3,060m 17 km 12-16 hours

Summit day! Begin the ascent at midnight, trekking by headlamp through scree to Stella Point (5,756m) and then to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — the roof of Africa. Watch the sunrise from the summit before descending through the crater to Barafu, then continuing down to Mweka Camp.

8
Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
3,060m → 1,640m 10 km 3-4 hours

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the Lemosho Route on Kilimanjaro.

Lemosho traverses five distinct ecological zones — from lush montane rainforest with colobus monkeys and tropical birds, through heath and moorland with giant lobelias, across the vast Shira Plateau with panoramic views of Kibo, past the dramatic Lava Tower volcanic formation, and finally through the barren alpine desert to the glaciated summit. No other route offers this diversity of landscapes in such pristine condition.
The 7-day itinerary includes two nights on the Shira Plateau for acclimatization, while the 8-day itinerary adds an extra night at Shira 2 Camp before proceeding to Lava Tower. The additional day provides more gradual altitude gain, which is why the 8-day option has the highest summit success rate of approximately 95%. For first-time trekkers or those concerned about altitude, we recommend the 8-day option.
On Day 4 of the Lemosho itinerary, you ascend from Shira 2 Camp (3,900m) to the Lava Tower (4,630m), gaining 730 meters of altitude. After spending time at the tower, you descend to Barranco Camp (3,950m) for the night. This "climb high, sleep low" strategy stimulates your body to produce more red blood cells and adapt to thinner air, dramatically reducing the risk of altitude sickness and improving your summit success rate.
The Lemosho Route has a summit success rate of approximately 95%, the highest of all Kilimanjaro routes. This is due to the route's excellent acclimatization profile, including the Lava Tower day and the longer 7-8 day itineraries that allow gradual altitude gain. Our experienced guides monitor every climber's condition and adjust the pace to maximize your chances of reaching Uhuru Peak.
The best months for the Lemosho Route are January-March and June-October. The dry seasons offer the clearest skies and most stable weather for summit attempts. January-March is slightly cooler with fewer crowds, while June-October is the peak season with the warmest conditions. We recommend avoiding April-May (long rains) and November (short rains) for the best experience.
