How to Get from Safari to Zanzibar

Getting from the Serengeti to Zanzibar is straightforward. Several airlines operate daily flights connecting the main safari hubs to Zanzibar Airport.

From the Serengeti

Coastal Aviation and Auric Air operate daily flights from Seronera (Serengeti) to Zanzibar, usually with a brief stop in Arusha or Kilimanjaro. The total flight time is approximately three to four hours including the stop. You leave the bush after breakfast and arrive on the beach in time for lunch.

From Arusha or Kilimanjaro

If your safari ends in Arusha, daily flights to Zanzibar take about one hour. This is the most common and affordable routing. Coastal Aviation, Precision Air, and Fly540 all operate this route with multiple daily departures.

From Dar es Salaam

If your itinerary includes Dar es Salaam, you can take a fast ferry to Zanzibar (about 90 minutes) or a short 20-minute flight. The ferry is an experience in itself — colourful, crowded, and a great introduction to coastal Tanzania.

Book internal flights in advance during peak season (June to October and December). Flights have limited capacity and sell out, especially during school holidays.

What to Do in Zanzibar

Zanzibar offers far more than just beaches. Here are the highlights:

Stone Town

The historic heart of Zanzibar City is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Narrow alleyways wind past crumbling coral stone buildings, mosques, and bustling markets. Visit the House of Wonders, the Old Fort, the slave market museum, and the vibrant fruit and spice market. Hire a local guide for a walking tour — the history is fascinating and the stories bring the town to life.

Beaches

Zanzibar has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. The east coast — particularly Nungwi, Kendwa, and Paje — offers powdery white sand and crystal-clear water. The west coast beaches near Stone Town are quieter and more local. The south-east coast is popular for kitesurfing. Choose your beach based on your pace — Nungwi and Kendwa for liveliness, Paje and Jambiani for tranquillity.

Snorkelling and Diving

Logistics Tips

• Pack for both: Bring safari clothing and beachwear. You will go from dusty game drives to sandy beaches in the same trip. A quick-dry travel towel is useful.
• Currency: US dollars are accepted everywhere in Tanzania. Zanzibar also accepts Tanzanian shillings. ATMs are available in Stone Town and at major resorts.
• Transport on Zanzibar: Hire a driver for your beach transfer, or take a taxi. Dala-dalas (local minibuses) are cheap but crowded and slow. Most resorts can arrange airport transfers.
• Alcohol: Zanzibar is predominantly Muslim and alcohol is restricted in some areas. Beach resorts and Stone Town restaurants serve alcohol freely, but be respectful in more conservative areas.
