The best Tanzania trips combine two extraordinary experiences: world-class wildlife safari and a tropical island beach holiday. After days of early mornings and game drives, there is nothing better than stepping onto white sand, swimming in turquoise water, and watching the sun set over the Indian Ocean. Here is how to combine safari and Zanzibar perfectly.
Why Combine Safari and Zanzibar?
Tanzania offers both the greatest wildlife spectacle on Earth and some of the most beautiful beaches in the Indian Ocean. Combining them gives you the perfect balance — adventure and relaxation, dust and ocean, early mornings and lazy afternoons. It is also surprisingly easy logistically, with direct flights connecting the safari circuit to Zanzibar.
Most travellers find that seven days of safari is the sweet spot for wildlife. Adding four to five days on Zanzibar gives you enough time to recover from the pace of safari, explore Stone Town, and enjoy the beach without rushing. The total trip duration of 10 to 12 days is the most popular combination we design.
How to Get from Safari to Zanzibar
Getting from the Serengeti to Zanzibar is straightforward. Several airlines operate daily flights connecting the main safari hubs to Zanzibar Airport.
From the Serengeti
Coastal Aviation and Auric Air operate daily flights from Seronera (Serengeti) to Zanzibar, usually with a brief stop in Arusha or Kilimanjaro. The total flight time is approximately three to four hours including the stop. You leave the bush after breakfast and arrive on the beach in time for lunch.
From Arusha or Kilimanjaro
If your safari ends in Arusha, daily flights to Zanzibar take about one hour. This is the most common and affordable routing. Coastal Aviation, Precision Air, and Fly540 all operate this route with multiple daily departures.
From Dar es Salaam
If your itinerary includes Dar es Salaam, you can take a fast ferry to Zanzibar (about 90 minutes) or a short 20-minute flight. The ferry is an experience in itself — colourful, crowded, and a great introduction to coastal Tanzania.
Book internal flights in advance during peak season (June to October and December). Flights have limited capacity and sell out, especially during school holidays.
Timing: How Many Days for Each
The ideal split depends on your interests and total available time. Here are our recommended combinations:
- 7 days safari + 4 days Zanzibar (11 days total): The most popular option. Full northern circuit safari with Serengeti and Ngorongoro, then four nights on Zanzibar for beach, culture, and relaxation.
- 5 days safari + 5 days Zanzibar (10 days total): A shorter but still rewarding safari covering Tarangire, Manyara, and Ngorongoro, with a longer beach stay.
- 10 days safari + 4 days Zanzibar (14 days total): The ultimate combination — comprehensive safari including the migration and remote Serengeti sectors, plus a proper beach holiday.

What to Do in Zanzibar
Zanzibar offers far more than just beaches. Here are the highlights:
Stone Town
The historic heart of Zanzibar City is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Narrow alleyways wind past crumbling coral stone buildings, mosques, and bustling markets. Visit the House of Wonders, the Old Fort, the slave market museum, and the vibrant fruit and spice market. Hire a local guide for a walking tour — the history is fascinating and the stories bring the town to life.
Beaches
Zanzibar has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. The east coast — particularly Nungwi, Kendwa, and Paje — offers powdery white sand and crystal-clear water. The west coast beaches near Stone Town are quieter and more local. The south-east coast is popular for kitesurfing. Choose your beach based on your pace — Nungwi and Kendwa for liveliness, Paje and Jambiani for tranquillity.
Snorkelling and Diving
The reefs around Zanzibar are vibrant and accessible. Mnemba Atoll, off the north-east coast, is the best snorkelling site — clear water, colourful coral, and abundant fish. The Menai Bay Conservation Area on the west coast offers excellent diving. Stone Town's waterfront is good for beginner dives and dolphin trips.
Spice Tours
Zanzibar is known as the Spice Island. A half-day spice tour takes you to a working spice farm where you see, smell, and taste cloves, vanilla, cardamom, cinnamon, and dozens of other spices growing in the wild. Guides demonstrate how each spice is used and you return with fresh spices as souvenirs.
Dhow Sunset Cruise
A traditional wooden dhow cruise at sunset is a Zanzibar essential. Sail along the coast as the sun drops below the horizon, drinks in hand, with the sound of the sail and the water. Several operators offer sunset cruises departing from Stone Town, Nungwi, or the beach hotels.
Logistics Tips
- Pack for both: Bring safari clothing and beachwear. You will go from dusty game drives to sandy beaches in the same trip. A quick-dry travel towel is useful.
- Currency: US dollars are accepted everywhere in Tanzania. Zanzibar also accepts Tanzanian shillings. ATMs are available in Stone Town and at major resorts.
- Transport on Zanzibar: Hire a driver for your beach transfer, or take a taxi. Dala-dalas (local minibuses) are cheap but crowded and slow. Most resorts can arrange airport transfers.
- Alcohol: Zanzibar is predominantly Muslim and alcohol is restricted in some areas. Beach resorts and Stone Town restaurants serve alcohol freely, but be respectful in more conservative areas.
The transition from safari to beach is one of the most satisfying travel experiences. You arrive on Zanzibar tired from days of adventure, and within hours you are floating in warm Indian Ocean water with the stress of everyday life feeling very far away.
Budget
A combined safari and Zanzibar trip costs more than either alone, but it is excellent value for the diversity of experience. A mid-range combination runs from $4,500 to $6,500 per person for 10 to 12 days including flights between the safari and the island. Luxury combinations with premium lodges and beach resorts start from $9,000 per person.
Budget-conscious travellers can reduce costs by choosing shorter safaris and more affordable beach accommodation. The key expense is the internal flights between the safari circuit and Zanzibar, which are fixed and non-negotiable. Everything else — safari lodges, beach hotels, activities — can be scaled to your budget.
