What Food is Served During the Climb? Kilimanjaro Meals Explained

🍽️ Eating Well on Kilimanjaro: Why It Matters

When climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, eating enough nutritious food is not just about comfort it’s essential for energy, recovery, and altitude adjustment. Your body burns thousands of calories each day due to the hiking, cold, and reduced oxygen at high altitudes. That’s why Bush Lion Tours makes food a priority on all climbs to help keep you strong, satisfied, and motivated all the way to the summit.

What Kind of Meals Are Provided?

You will be served three hot meals daily breakfast, lunch, and dinner plus snacks and plenty of drinking water. Our professional mountain cooks prepare food fresh at each camp, using clean, safe ingredients. Meals are served in a dining tent (or hut for Marangu route), with tables and chairs to make you comfortable after a long hike.

🍳 Breakfast

Served early before the day’s hike begins. It usually includes:

  • Porridge (hot and filling)
  • Bread, pancakes, or toast
  • Eggs (fried, boiled, or omelette)
  • Sausages or bacon (optional)
  • Fruits (bananas, oranges, apples)
  • Tea, coffee, hot chocolate

This meal provides carbohydrates and proteins to fuel your body for hours of trekking.

🥪 Lunch

Lunch may be served hot at camp (on short hiking days) or as a packed lunch box (on long trekking days). It often includes:

  • Sandwiches or chapati wraps
  • Chicken or boiled eggs
  • Fresh fruits and juice
  • Cookies or muffins
  • Tea or juice

If eaten at camp, lunch may also include hot soup, rice or pasta, and cooked vegetables.

🍲 Dinner

Dinner is the biggest and most important meal of the day. After a long hike, you’ll enjoy:

  • Hot soup (e.g. pumpkin, vegetable, or tomato)
  • Rice, pasta, or potatoes
  • Meat stew, chicken curry, or lentils
  • Cooked vegetables (e.g. cabbage, spinach, carrots)
  • Fresh fruits for dessert
  • Herbal tea or hot chocolate

Warm, hearty, and flavorful — this meal helps your body recover and prepare for the next day.

🍬 Snacks and Energy Boosts

You are welcome to carry your own favorite snacks — like energy bars, nuts, dried fruit, or candy — to eat on the trail. Our team also provides light snacks like popcorn or biscuits during afternoon tea to help you recover after hiking.

🥦 Special Diets and Allergies

At Bush Lion Tours, we take your dietary needs seriously. Whether you are vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, or allergic to certain foods (like nuts or tomatoes), we can customize your meals. You just need to let us know in advance, and we will inform your cook before the climb. We also make sure to carry safe drinking water (boiled and filtered) and encourage all climbers to stay hydrated.

đź’ˇ Water, Hydration & Safety

Clean drinking water is boiled and filtered before every meal. We encourage all climbers to drink at least 3–4 liters of water daily to avoid dehydration, which is a serious concern at high altitude. Tea, juice, and soups also help with fluid intake.
