Half an hour drive from Moshi brings you to the Machame Gate, where your Kilimanjaro climb officially begins after completing park registrations. From here, you start your trek on the famous Machame Route, one of the most scenic paths on Mount Kilimanjaro.
The trail gradually climbs through a beautiful and dense rainforest, filled with tall trees, birds, and fresh mountain air. This section is less crowded compared to other routes, giving you a more peaceful trekking experience. Because of the forest environment, the path can be wet, muddy, and sometimes slightly overgrown, adding a real sense of adventure to your first day on the mountain.
From Machame Camp, your journey continues steadily upward as you leave the rainforest behind and begin the climb into the moorland zone. The trail becomes steeper as you approach the dramatic ascent onto the Shira Plateau, one of the most scenic and open sections of the entire Machame Route.
Once you reach Shira Camp (3,830m / 12,566ft), you are rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of Mount Kilimanjaro and the surrounding landscapes. Looking back on clear days, you can even see Mount Meru rising in the distance above Arusha City, creating a stunning backdrop that makes this stage of the trek truly unforgettable.
From Shira Camp, you continue your trek across the high moorland zone, where the landscape changes dramatically into wide open volcanic terrain. The trail traverses the southwest side of Mount Kilimanjaro, offering breathtaking views as you approach the iconic Lava Tower area and the dramatic cliffs of the Western Breach.
During the day, you reach higher elevations of up to 4,600m (15,091ft) before descending again towards Barranco Camp (3,972m / 13,031ft). This “walk high, sleep low” strategy is very important for acclimatization, helping your body adapt safely to altitude while improving your chances of a successful summit. Barranco Camp welcomes you with stunning scenery and a peaceful mountain atmosphere, perfect for rest and recovery.
After breakfast at Barranco Camp, you begin a steady climb toward Karanga Valley Camp, following one of the most scenic and rewarding sections of the Machame Route. The trail first leads you up the famous Barranco Wall, a thrilling but non-technical scramble that offers incredible views once you reach the top.
From there, the route continues through rolling ridges and alpine desert terrain with stunning views of Kibo peak in the distance. The landscape becomes more rugged and open, showing the true beauty of Mount Kilimanjaro’s high-altitude environment. You arrive at Karanga Valley Camp ready to rest, hydrate, and recover, preparing your body for the higher altitude challenges ahead on your summit journey.
From Karanga Camp (3,963m / 13,002ft), you continue your ascent toward Barafu Camp (4,640m / 15,223ft), the final base before your summit attempt. The trail becomes steeper and more rugged as you enter the high alpine desert, where vegetation disappears and the landscape turns into rocky scree slopes with dramatic views of the summit zones ahead.
As you climb higher, the air becomes thinner and the environment more challenging, making steady pacing and hydration very important. Upon arrival at Barafu Camp, you settle in for rest, early dinner, and preparation for the midnight summit push. This is your final staging point before the incredible ascent to Uhuru Peak (5,895m / 19,340ft), the Roof of Africa.
From Barafu Camp (4,640m / 15,223ft), your summit journey begins around midnight as you slowly make your way up the steep scree slopes toward the summit glaciers of Mount Kilimanjaro. The climb is demanding due to altitude, but every step brings you closer to the Roof of Africa. After about 4–5 hours of steady ascent, you reach Stella Point (5,739m / 18,829ft) on the crater rim, just in time to witness the first golden rays of sunrise breaking over the horizon, illuminating glaciers, volcanic formations, and the vast African landscape below.
From Stella Point, you continue for about one more hour along the crater rim to reach Uhuru Peak (5,895m / 19,340ft), the highest point in Africa. Standing at the summit is a truly unforgettable achievement, with panoramic views stretching across Mawenzi Peak and the surrounding ice-capped crater walls. After celebrating your success, you begin your descent back to Barafu Camp for a short rest and breakfast, before continuing down to Millennium Camp (3,790m / 12,434ft) for a well-earned overnight recovery after an incredible summit day.
A gentle descent takes you through the lush rainforest as you trek from Millennium Camp down to Mweka Gate (1,630m / 5,348ft). The trail is scenic and refreshing, offering a final opportunity to enjoy the beauty of Mount Kilimanjaro’s lower slopes as you make your way out of the park.
Upon arrival at Mweka Gate, you will complete park formalities and proudly receive your summit certificates — a memorable achievement you can treasure forever. Here, you will also take a moment to thank your mountain crew, including guides, cooks, and porters, and show appreciation through tipping as a way of recognizing their hard work and support throughout your climb. Afterward, you will be met by our vehicle and transferred back to the hotel in Moshi, where you can relax with a warm shower and celebrate your incredible Kilimanjaro achievement with a cold drink and a well-deserved celebration.
After your unforgettable Kilimanjaro adventure, the day is kept free for relaxation and recovery before your flight home.
