Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is an adventure of a lifetime. To make the journey safe, enjoyable, and successful, it is important to understand the daily routine on the mountain. From waking up early to reach the next camp, to enjoying meals and resting at night, each day has a carefully planned schedule designed to maximize acclimatization, safety, and energy for the climb.
At Bush Lion Tours, we create itineraries that balance trekking, rest, nutrition, and breathtaking scenery, ensuring climbers have an unforgettable experience.
Most days begin between 6:00 and 7:00 AM. The cool morning air makes it easier to start walking, and the early hours give you the chance to cover ground before the afternoon weather changes.
Waking up includes sipping warm tea or coffee, enjoying a light breakfast, and packing your gear for the day. This preparation helps your body wake up gently and ensures you start the trek energized and ready for the day’s adventure.
The day’s hike is paced according to the “Pole Pole” (slowly, slowly) principle, giving your body time to adjust to higher altitudes. Walking is interspersed with short breaks to hydrate, take photos, and admire the changing landscapes—from lush forests to rocky highlands.
Lunchtime often occurs on the trail, with light, nourishing meals that restore energy. Our guides at Bush Lion Tours make sure that each break is relaxing but efficient, allowing everyone to continue the trek without rushing.
Arriving at the next camp is a special moment. You are greeted by the support team, tents are ready, and warm drinks await. This is the perfect time to rest, stretch, and enjoy the views. Some days may include short acclimatization walks nearby, helping your body adjust further before dinner.
Evenings are calm. After a hearty meal, climbers can plan for the next day, relax under the stars, or share stories with fellow hikers.
Summit night is the most challenging and memorable part of the climb. Climbers wake around midnight and start the trek in darkness, using headlamps to light the trail. Every step is slow and deliberate, guided by our experienced team.
Reaching Uhuru Peak at sunrise is magical—the sun glows on the glaciers, and the views stretch across Tanzania and Kenya. At Bush Lion Tours, guides ensure climbers stay hydrated, motivated, and safe for both the ascent and the descent.
Hydration and nutrition are central to a safe climb. Drinking water consistently and eating meals designed for energy help prevent fatigue and altitude sickness. Our mountain chefs prepare fresh, balanced meals each day, while guides monitor every climber’s well-being to ensure safety and comfort.
