The Machame Route is one of the most popular ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Known as the “Whiskey Route”, it offers beautiful scenery, good acclimatization, and a high success rate. It starts on the southern side of Kilimanjaro and passes through rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and finally to the arctic summit zone.
Many climbers choose the Machame Route because it is scenic and a bit challenging, but still manageable for beginners with good preparation. It’s also less expensive than other longer routes like Lemosho, making it ideal for budget-conscious travelers.
The total distance of the Machame Route is about 62 kilometers (38.5 miles) from the starting gate to the summit and down to Mweka Gate. Most people complete it in 6 or 7 days to allow proper acclimatization.
Machame Route gives you time to adjust to the altitude and increases your chances of reaching the summit successfully. The views of Mount Meru, the Shira Plateau, Lava Tower, Barranco Wall, and Uhuru Peak are unforgettable. It’s a great route for those who want both adventure and amazing landscapes.
The best months to climb via the Machame Route are January to early March and from June to October. These months offer the best weather and clear views. However, you can climb all year round with proper gear and preparation.
You will sleep in tents at designated campsites. Our team of guides, porters, and cooks will take care of everything. You only carry your daypack, and the rest is handled by our support crew.
