What to Pack for a Tanzania Safari: Complete Packing Checklist

Planning a Tanzania safari is exciting the thought of seeing lions, elephants, giraffes, and endless savannahs stirs the soul. But once the trip is booked, one important question quickly follows: what should I pack?

Packing for a safari is not like packing for a beach holiday or a city tour. Tanzania’s safari destinations offer wild, remote, and sometimes unpredictable conditions. You need to be prepared but not overpacked. The key is to bring what’s essential, versatile, and suitable for the bush. Let’s walk you through everything you’ll need for a comfortable, safe, and memorable safari in Tanzania.

What Clothes to Pack for a Tanzania Safari

When it comes to clothing, think lightweight, breathable, and neutral-colored. Days on safari are often warm or hot, especially in the dry season, but mornings and evenings can be chilly, especially in places like Ngorongoro Crater or during early morning game drives.

Long-sleeved shirts and long trousers not only keep you warm in cooler hours but also protect you from the sun and insect bites. Avoid bright colors like red or blue, which can attract insects or disturb animals. Earthy tones such as khaki, olive green, beige, and brown blend well with the surroundings and are ideal.

Essential Safari Footwear and Accessories

Comfortable walking shoes or safari boots are a must, especially if your itinerary includes walking safaris or cultural visits. Flip-flops or sandals are useful for wearing at the lodge or tented camp in the evenings.

A wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and a lightweight scarf will help you stay cool and shielded from the sun during long days on the road.

Choosing the Right Safari Luggage

In terms of luggage, a soft-sided duffel bag is preferred over a hard suitcase, especially if you’ll be flying on small domestic planes where weight and size are restricted. Try to keep your bag under 15 kilograms if flying between parks.

Bring a small backpack or daypack for game drives  something light enough to carry, but big enough to hold your camera, sunscreen, insect repellent, water bottle, and binoculars.

Must-Have Safari Gear and Gadgets

Speaking of binoculars, they’re one of the most valuable things to carry on safari. Even though your guide will often have a pair, having your own lets you focus on what excites you.

A good camera with zoom lens will help you capture those once-in-a-lifetime moments, whether it’s a lion hunt, a cheetah with her cubs, or a colorful lilac-breasted roller perched on a tree.

Travel Documents and Important Papers

Don’t forget your travel documents. Bring printed copies of your passport, travel insurance, vaccination certificate (especially yellow fever if applicable), visa confirmation, and booking vouchers. Keep them in a waterproof pouch or travel organizer that’s easy to reach.

It’s also smart to bring a small amount of cash in USD, as well as a card for emergencies though most safari lodges are in remote areas with limited access to ATMs or mobile payments.

Health and Safety Essentials for Safari

When it comes to health and safety, pack any prescription medications you need, plus basic first aid supplies painkillers, motion sickness tablets, stomach relief tablets, and rehydration salts are always handy.

Most travelers also bring hand sanitizer, wet wipes, and tissues. Malaria is present in many safari regions, so talk to your doctor about antimalarial medication before you travel, and use insect repellent with DEET to avoid bites.

Electronics and Power Needs

Don’t forget power adapters (Tanzania uses UK-style plugs, Type G), a power bank for charging your phone and camera in the car, and a flashlight or headlamp for use at night in camps or lodges with limited electricity.
