One of the most common questions we get from climbers is, “What are the toilets like on Kilimanjaro?” It’s a fair and important concern, especially when you’re spending a week hiking in remote mountain conditions. While Kilimanjaro doesn’t have modern restrooms, basic toilet facilities are available, and with the right expectations and preparation, you’ll manage just fine.
Each official campsite along the mountain routes has basic pit latrines, usually built with wooden or concrete floors and a squat hole. These are very simple toilets, with no running water and minimal privacy. Some are better maintained than others, but generally, they are functional — not luxurious.
They may not smell good, especially at busy campsites. It’s recommended to carry your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer since these are not provided.
For extra comfort and hygiene, Bush Lion Tours offers private portable toilet tents on request (sometimes included in mid-range and premium packages). These portable toilets are chemical toilets set up in a small privacy tent just for your group. They’re cleaner, more private, and maintained daily by our crew.
If you’re concerned about sanitation, we highly recommend including a portable toilet in your climb package — especially for families or climbers who want more comfort.
There are no showers on the mountain, but our team provides warm washing water every morning and evening. You’ll receive a small bowl with hot water so you can wash your hands, face, and feet. It’s refreshing after a long day of hiking.

Personal hygiene items like pads or tampons for female climbers
Your guide and porter team will assist with setup and cleaning of private toilet tents, but personal cleanliness is your responsibility — so prepare well.
