7 Kilimanjaro Routes – Duration, Difficulty & Distance

Mount Kilimanjaro has 7 official trekking routes, each with different scenery, difficulty levels, duration, and success rates. Choosing the right route is one of the most important decisions you’ll make when planning your climb.

Some routes are shorter and more direct, while others are longer and better for acclimatization. Some are popular and busy, while others offer more remote, quiet experiences. Here’s a detailed look at each of the official Kilimanjaro routes:

1. Marangu Route – “Coca-Cola Route”

  • Duration: 5–6 Days
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Distance: Approx. 72 km (45 miles)
  • Accommodation: Huts
  • Success Rate: ~50–65%

Marangu is the only route with hut accommodation and is the shortest route in terms of days. However, it has a steeper daily elevation gain, which gives climbers less time to acclimatize, reducing summit success rate.

2. Machame Route – “Whiskey Route”

  • Duration: 6–7 Days
  • Difficulty: Medium to Challenging
  • Distance: Approx. 62 km (38.5 miles)
  • Accommodation: Camping
  • Success Rate: ~70–85%

Machame is the most popular route. It offers excellent scenery and a great acclimatization profile with the “climb high, sleep low” strategy. It’s steeper and more scenic than Marangu.

3. Lemosho Route

  • Duration: 7–8 Days
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Distance: Approx. 70 km (43.5 miles)
  • Accommodation: Camping
  • Success Rate: ~85–90%

Lemosho is considered one of the best all-around routes — with beautiful views, fewer crowds (at the start), and very high summit success rates. It joins the Machame route on day 3 or 4.

4. Rongai Route

  • Duration: 6–7 Days
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Distance: Approx. 73 km (45 miles)
  • Accommodation: Camping
  • Success Rate: ~70–85%

Rongai approaches Kilimanjaro from the north side, offering a drier and quieter trail. It’s ideal during rainy months and suitable for climbers looking to avoid crowds.

5. Northern Circuit Route

  • Duration: 8–9 Days
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Distance: Approx. 98 km (61 miles)
  • Accommodation: Camping
  • Success Rate: ~90–95%

The longest route on Kilimanjaro, circling around the mountain from the west to the north. It offers superior acclimatization and the highest success rate. Great for those who want a quiet and scenic route.

6. Umbwe Route

  • Duration: 5–6 Days
  • Difficulty: Very Difficult
  • Distance: Approx. 53 km (33 miles)
  • Accommodation: Camping
  • Success Rate: ~45–60%

Umbwe is the steepest and most direct route, with poor acclimatization opportunities. Best for experienced hikers or climbers looking for a true challenge.

7. Shira Route

  • Duration: 7–8 Days
  • Difficulty: Moderate to Hard
  • Distance: Approx. 56 km (35 miles)
  • Accommodation: Camping
  • Success Rate: ~75–85%

Shira starts at a higher elevation than Lemosho (via Shira Gate), which can make acclimatization tricky for some. It’s scenic but less commonly used due to its starting altitude and similarities with Lemosho.
