How to Get to Kilimanjaro

How to Get to Kilimanjaro

If you are planning to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, one of the first questions that comes to mind is how to get there. Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa and attracts thousands of adventurers every year. Located in northern Tanzania, it is accessible by both international and local travel options. Understanding how to reach Kilimanjaro will make your journey smooth and stress-free, giving you more time to enjoy the adventure ahead.

Arriving by Air

The easiest way to get to Kilimanjaro is by flying into Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), which is located between the towns of Arusha and Moshi. This airport connects directly with major cities such as Amsterdam, Doha, and Istanbul, and also has regional connections from Nairobi, Addis Ababa, and Dar es Salaam. Many climbers choose this airport because it is only a short drive from Moshi, the main base for Kilimanjaro treks.

If there are no direct flights from your country, you can fly into Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) in Dar es Salaam or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) in Nairobi. From there, you can either take a domestic flight to Kilimanjaro or travel by road.

Road Travel to Kilimanjaro

For travelers who enjoy seeing the countryside, road travel is another option. From Nairobi, you can take a shuttle bus or private transfer to Moshi or Arusha, which usually takes about 5–7 hours. From Dar es Salaam, it is possible to travel by bus or private car, but the journey is long and can take over 10 hours. Most climbers prefer flying directly to save time and energy.

Getting to the Starting Point of the Climb

Once you arrive in Moshi or Arusha, we will arrange transfers to the starting gate of your chosen Kilimanjaro route. The most popular routes include Machame, Marangu, Lemosho, and Rongai. Each starting point is within a few hours’ drive from Moshi, making it very convenient for climbers.

Best Travel Tips

When planning how to get to Kilimanjaro, it is important to book your flights early, especially during high season. Make sure your travel documents, including passport and visa, are ready before you arrive. Also, carrying some local Tanzanian shillings can be helpful for small expenses upon arrival. Choosing a reliable tour operator will ensure that airport pickups and local transfers are well organized.
