Is Kilimanjaro Harder Than Mount Kenya?

Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest peak in Africa at 5,895 meters above sea level, while Mount Kenya’s highest point, Batian, reaches 5,199 meters. Kilimanjaro is usually considered a trekking mountain because you do not need technical climbing skills, but the real challenge is the altitude. The higher you go, the less oxygen there is, and many climbers experience altitude sickness. On summit night, the long and cold hike to Uhuru Peak makes Kilimanjaro physically and mentally demanding.

Mount Kenya, on the other hand, offers both trekking and technical climbing. The trekking routes such as Lenana Peak are lower in altitude compared to Kilimanjaro, making them less extreme in terms of altitude sickness. However, if you aim for the true summits, Batian and Nelion, you will need rock climbing skills and proper mountaineering gear. This means Mount Kenya can be technically harder, but Kilimanjaro is tougher when it comes to endurance, altitude, and overall stamina.
