Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa and one of the most famous trekking destinations in the world. Many travelers are amazed by its snow-capped peak and unique beauty. A common question that climbers and researchers often ask is: Is Kilimanjaro a volcano? The answer is yes, but its volcanic activity is very old and no longer active today.
Kilimanjaro is not just one single mountain. It is actually made up of three volcanic cones: Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira. Among the three, Kibo is the tallest and the only cone that still has signs of dormant volcanic activity. Scientists believe that the last major eruption happened over 360,000 years ago, while smaller activity may have occurred about 200 years ago. Today, there is no danger of eruption, and the mountain is safe for climbers.
Kibo is considered a dormant volcano, which means it could erupt again in the distant future, but experts confirm that the chance is extremely low. Mawenzi and Shira, the other two volcanic cones, are completely extinct. This makes Mount Kilimanjaro a fascinating natural wonder — a mountain that was shaped by fire but now stands peacefully under ice and snow.
The volcanic history of Kilimanjaro has given the mountain its unique landscapes. From fertile volcanic soils that support lush forests to dramatic rocky slopes and glaciers at the summit, the mountain tells the story of fire and ice. This mix of natural forces is one of the reasons why climbing Kilimanjaro feels like moving through different worlds in just a few days.
