Climbers often wonder if they can use their mobile phones while climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. Since Kilimanjaro is a remote mountain with no built-in network towers, the mobile coverage can be very limited. However, in some areas, especially at lower altitudes and around the camps, you might still find a signal depending on your provider.
While climbing Kilimanjaro, you may be able to connect to a network in places like Machame Gate, certain parts of the Shira Plateau, and sometimes even at Barafu Camp. But as you climb higher, especially towards the summit, the signal becomes very weak or disappears completely. Some climbers are lucky to catch a brief connection to send a text or a quick update, but it is never guaranteed.
If you want to increase your chances of staying connected, buying a local SIM card in Tanzania can be helpful. Providers like Vodacom and Airtel tend to work better on the slopes of Kilimanjaro compared to international SIM cards. Even with this option, the network is not stable at higher camps. This means it is best not to rely fully on your phone for communication.
When it comes to safety, climbers should not depend on their personal mobile phones. Kilimanjaro trekking teams carry radios and satellite phones for emergency communication, which are far more reliable than normal mobile coverage. This ensures that in case of altitude sickness or any other problem, help can be reached quickly without depending on mobile signal.
Many climbers see the limited mobile coverage as part of the adventure. Being away from constant phone use allows you to fully enjoy the mountain, focus on the journey, and connect with nature. You can take pictures and record memories on your phone, but communication will always be uncertain until you descend back to the lower areas where coverage is stronger.
