Everything you need to know before your trip to Tanzania.

Visa Requirements

Most nationalities need a visa. Visa on arrival available at airports ($50 USD for US citizens, $100 for others). Alternatively, apply online via visa.immigration.go.tz before travel.

Vaccinations

Yellow Fever certificate required if coming from endemic countries. Recommended: Hepatitis A & B, Typhoid, Tetanus. Malaria prophylaxis advised — consult your doctor.

Currency

Tanzanian Shilling (TZS) is local currency. USD widely accepted for safari payments (bills must be printed after 2009). ATMs available in Moshi & Arusha.

Language

Swahili is the national language. English is widely spoken in tourist areas. All our guides speak fluent English. French & German available on request.

Safety

Tanzania is one of Africa's safest destinations. Moshi & Arusha are tourist-friendly cities. We provide 24/7 support and AMREF evacuation cover on all trips.

Travel Insurance

Mandatory for all Kilimanjaro climbers. Must cover altitude up to 6,000m and helicopter evacuation. Safari travelers strongly recommended to have insurance.

Dry seasons: Jan-Mar & Jun-Oct (best for safaris). Wet season: Apr-May. Kilimanjaro can be climbed year-round. Pack layers — temps range from 30°C to -15°C.

East Africa Time (EAT) — UTC+3. Same time as Kenya & Uganda. 7 hours ahead of New York, 4 hours ahead of London.

Electricity

230V, Type D & G plugs (UK-style). Hotels have adapters. On mountain, we carry power banks for charging devices. Bring a portable charger.

You don't need to be an athlete! If you can walk 5-6 hours a day for several days, you can climb Kilimanjaro. We recommend starting a fitness routine 2-3 months before. Our guides adjust the pace to your comfort level, and we have a 98% summit success rate.
Kilimanjaro can be climbed year-round. The best months are January-March and June-October (dry seasons). January-March is quieter. June-October is peak season. April-May is long rains — not recommended.
