Overview

The 8 days Lemosho route is a breathtaking journey to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak. This scenic route offers trekkers an opportunity to experience the diverse landscapes and ecosystems of Kilimanjaro while allowing for proper acclimatization. As one of the newer and less crowded paths, the Lemosho route has gained popularity among climbers seeking a more immersive and challenging adventure.

Embarking on this 8-day expedition requires careful planning and preparation. Trekkers will traverse through lush rainforests, alpine deserts, and glacial valleys before reaching Stella Point and ultimately the Uhuru Peak. The journey includes stops at various camps, including the famous Barafu Camp, which serves as the base for the final summit push. This article will provide essential tips and a detailed itinerary to help climbers make the most of their Kilimanjaro Lemosho route experience.

The Lemosho Route Profile

The Lemosho route is widely regarded as one of the most scenic and beautiful paths to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. This route offers trekkers a unique opportunity to experience the diverse landscapes and ecosystems of Africa’s highest peak. Starting from the west side of the mountain, the trail winds through lush rainforests before joining the Machame route to cross the spectacular Shira Plateau

Distance and Elevation Gain

The Lemosho route covers a total trekking distance of approximately 71 kilometers (43 miles) from gate to gate. This journey involves a significant elevation gain of about 16,000 to 17,000 feet. The route’s profile is characterized by a series of ascents and descents, which, while challenging, proves beneficial for acclimatization.

One of the key advantages of the Lemosho route is its adherence to the “climb high, sleep low” principle. This strategy involves ascending to higher altitudes during the day and then descending slightly to sleep at a lower elevation. This approach stimulates the body to produce more red blood cells, which carry oxygen, thereby enhancing acclimatization.

Camping Locations

The Lemosho route features several well-established camping locations, each offering unique views and experiences. The typical camping sequence for an 8-day itinerary is as follows:

  • Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,820 meters)
  • Shira Camp 1 (3,500 meters)
  • Shira Camp 2 (3,850 meters)
  • Barranco Camp (3,900 meters)
  • Karanga Camp (3,960 meters)
  • Kosovo Camp (4,800 meters) or Barafu Base Camp (4,670 meters)
  • Summit (5,895 meters) and descent to Millennium Camp (3,820 meters) or Mweka Camp (3,100 meters)
  • Descent to Mweka Gate (1,640 meters)

This gradual ascent allows for proper acclimatization, which is crucial for a successful summit attempt. The route passes through various ecological zones, from rainforest to alpine desert, providing a diverse and captivating trekking experience.

Difficulty Level

The Lemosho route is considered challenging due to its length and significant elevation changes. However, it’s important to note that no technical climbing is required. The route’s difficulty lies in its duration and the physical stamina needed to navigate the varying terrains and altitudes.

Despite its challenges, the Lemosho route boasts one of the highest success rates for reaching Uhuru Peak, Kilimanjaro’s summit. When undertaken over 8 days, the success rate can be as high as 90-95%. This high success rate is attributed to the route’s excellent acclimatization profile and the additional time it allows for adaptation to the altitude.

One of the most demanding sections of the route is the Barranco Wall, a steep climb that requires some scrambling. However, this challenge is often seen as a highlight of the trek, offering stunning views and a sense of accomplishment upon completion.

The final summit push from Kosovo Camp or Barafu Base Camp to Uhuru Peak is particularly grueling. This segment involves an elevation gain of 995 meters (3,264 feet) and typically takes about 14 hours round trip. The descent on the final day is also significant, with trekkers losing approximately 2,795 meters (9,170 feet) in altitude as they make their way back to the lower camps and ultimately to Mweka Gate.

In conclusion, the Lemosho route offers a balanced blend of challenge and beauty. Its longer itinerary and well-planned elevation profile contribute to its high success rate, making it an excellent choice for those seeking a memorable and rewarding Kilimanjaro experience. Proper preparation, both physical and mental, is key to enjoying this spectacular journey to the Roof of Africa.
