The Mount Meru Climbing Experience
The Mount Meru climb typically takes four days and three nights, although a three-day option is available. The journey begins with an early morning departure from Arusha or Moshi, followed by a drive to Momella Gate in Arusha National Park. At the gate, climbers meet their guides, porters, and game rangers before starting the ascent.
Day one involves a trek from Momella Gate (1500m) to Miriakamba Hut (2500m), covering either the Northern Circuit (4 hours) or the Southern Circuit (6 hours). The second day’s climb is shorter but more demanding, leading to Saddle Hut (3566m) in 3-4 hours. An afternoon hike to Little Meru (3794m) helps with acclimatization.
The summit day begins early, usually between 1:00 and 2:00 AM, for a sunrise ascent. Climbers reach Rhino Point (3850m) before continuing along a narrow ridge to Socialist Peak (4566m), the summit of Mount Meru. After enjoying the views and taking photos, they descend back to Saddle Hut.
On the final day, trekkers descend to Momella Gate, choosing between a longer route with better wildlife viewing opportunities or a shorter, more direct path.
Weather on Mount Meru can be unpredictable and varies with altitude. At the summit, temperatures can drop below freezing, with daytime highs around 15°C and nighttime lows reaching -5°C. Wind speeds at the top can range from 6 to 15 m/s, depending on the day.
The best time to climb Mount Meru is from June to February when the weather is typically dry and mild. December through February offer the clearest views of Mount Kilimanjaro. However, climbers should be prepared for sudden weather changes, including the possibility of rain or snow, especially at higher altitudes.
One of the unique aspects of climbing Mount Meru is the opportunity to observe wildlife during the trek. The lower slopes of the mountain, particularly in the grasslands and forests, are home to a variety of animals.
Climbers might encounter buffaloes, warthogs, and other grazers in the open grasslands near Momella Gate. As they ascend through the mountain forest, they have the chance to see different bird species and black and white colobus monkeys.
Higher up the mountain, in the moorland zone, wildlife becomes less common, but climbers might still spot smaller animals adapted to the altitude. The presence of an armed ranger throughout the trek ensures safety from potential wildlife encounters.
Notably, some climbers have reported seeing giraffes grazing near the trail, just a mile from the starting point. This highlights the unique experience of trekking through a wildlife-rich environment, setting Mount Meru apart from many other high-altitude climbs.

I contacted many top agencies, but Bush Lion, owned by Jackson, gave me the best price and was super responsive. Before the climb, Jackson and my guide Innocent met me at my hotel. They checked my gear and gave me a full briefing on what to expect. Innocent, along with the cook and the porters, played a huge role in helping me get to the top of Uhuru Peak and back safely. Every day, I had delicious meals, and Innocent always made sure to check my health and oxygen levels before bed.The porters went above and beyond. After setting up camp, they would walk back hours to carry my small bag while I was still on the trail. When I was coming down from the peak, they even climbed up to greet me with fresh juice and helped carry me for the last part of the descent because my knees were hurting.I’m really grateful for all their support. Their main goal is to make sure clients reach the summit safely and successfully.
