Serengeti Migration Safari

The Serengeti Migration Safari is one of the most spectacular wildlife events on the planet. This natural phenomenon, also known as the Great Migration, involves millions of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles moving across the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem in a continuous cycle in search of greener pastures. This awe-inspiring journey takes place in Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park and Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve.

What is the Serengeti Migration?

The Serengeti Migration is an annual movement of over 1.5 million wildebeest, accompanied by 200,000 zebras and 300,000 Thomson’s gazelles. This migration is driven by the rains and the need to find fresh grazing. The cycle begins in the southern Serengeti plains, where the animals give birth, and moves through the western corridor to the northern Serengeti and Maasai Mara before returning south.

Best Time to Witness the Wildebeest Migration

The best time to experience the Serengeti Migration varies depending on which part of the migration you wish to witness:

  • January to March: Calving season in the southern Serengeti, where thousands of wildebeest calves are born each day.
  • April to June: The herds move towards the western Serengeti, with dramatic river crossings at the Grumeti River.
  • July to September: The migration reaches the northern Serengeti and the Maasai Mara, featuring the famous Mara River crossings.
  • October to December: The herds move back to the southern Serengeti, completing the cycle.
