Kilimanjaro Climbing via Thomas Glacier Route 10 Days

From $2,550

Tour Overview

The Thomas Glacier Route is one of the most unique and lesser-known paths to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Named after the glacial ice formations found near the northern ice fields of the mountain, the Thomas Glacier is a dramatic and rarely visited part of Kilimanjaro. This route offers trekkers the incredible opportunity to climb through remote wilderness, away from the crowds, and to experience pristine glacial landscapes that most climbers never see.

Unlike traditional routes like Marangu or Machame, the Thomas Glacier Route combines parts of the Lemosho route with a high camp near the glacier itself, followed by a summit approach through the Northern Ice Field and across the Reusch Crater. This approach not only increases your chances of a successful summit due to better acclimatization but also provides breathtaking views and an unforgettable adventure. It is ideal for experienced trekkers looking for a quiet, challenging, and truly spectacular way to reach the Roof of Africa.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Tanzania – Transfer to Hotel

You will arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), where our friendly team will be waiting for you. After a warm welcome, you’ll be transferred to a comfortable hotel near Moshi town. This day is meant for rest and recovery from your journey. Enjoy a peaceful evening with a welcome dinner and get to know your guides. The hotel offers lush gardens and views of Mount Kilimanjaro, giving you your first taste of the adventure ahead.

After breakfast, you’ll have a full day to relax, acclimatize, and explore the area. The hotel grounds are perfect for walking or cycling (bicycles available), and nearby coffee farms and small villages offer authentic glimpses into Tanzanian life. This day helps your body adjust to higher altitudes. In the evening, you’ll meet with your mountain crew for a detailed briefing and equipment check. A final night in the hotel ensures you are well-rested before the trek begins.

Distance: 7 km | Time: 3–4 hours | Elevation gain: +395m
Your trek begins after a scenic drive to Lemosho Gate on the western side of the mountain. Here, the adventure starts as you walk through ancient rainforest, listening to bird calls and spotting monkeys high in the trees. The path is peaceful and gentle, allowing you to enjoy the beauty of nature. By late afternoon, you’ll arrive at Big Tree Camp, nestled under tall forest canopy. Your tents will be ready, and you’ll enjoy a hot meal under the stars.

Distance: 8 km | Time: 5–6 hours | Elevation gain: +720m
Today’s hike takes you from the dense rainforest to moorland and heath landscapes. As you climb higher, the air becomes cooler, and the trees give way to open views of the Shira Plateau. The path is peaceful, and you may see giant heathers and unique alpine plants. Shira 1 Camp sits in an open space with stunning views of Kilimanjaro’s upper slopes. This is your first night sleeping above 3,000 meters—a key step in acclimatization.

Distance: 6 km | Time: 4–5 hours | Elevation gain: +372m
This is a light hiking day to help your body adjust to altitude. After breakfast, we trek to Shira Cathedral, a dramatic rock formation offering breathtaking views across the plateau. As you climb, you’ll see the clouds far below, a surreal sight that reminds you of your altitude. After enjoying the views and taking photos, we descend back to Shira 1 for another night. This active rest day greatly improves your chances of summit success.

Distance: 10 km | Time: 5–6 hours | Elevation gain: +675m
We leave Shira Plateau behind and continue through high moorland. The path takes us past valleys and ridges toward Moir Hut Camp, a peaceful and secluded site on the edge of a rocky slope. Here, the air is dry and cold, and the stars at night are incredible. Streams from nearby rocks offer fresh water, and the silence of the mountain is deeply calming. This location is excellent for further acclimatization.

Distance: 6 km | Time: 4–5 hours | Elevation gain: +725m
Today we head to the special camp near Thomas Glacier. The trail is steep in parts and passes through barren alpine desert. As we approach the glacier, the landscape becomes otherworldly—frosted rocks, distant ice formations, and sharp mountain air. We set up camp near the glacier in preparation for tomorrow’s big day. This is one of the highest camps on Kilimanjaro and provides surreal views of the icefields.

Distance: 16 km | Time: 12–14 hours | Elevation gain: +995m, then descent of -2105m
We start at midnight, climbing slowly under the stars. The route passes the Moonlight Wall, a quiet, untouched path leading to the Northern Ice Field. If conditions allow, we use crampons to climb the Thomas Glacier, a shining river of ice in the moonlight. Crossing Reusch Crater and reaching Uhuru Peak at sunrise is an unforgettable moment—Africa’s highest point, with glacier views in every direction.

After photos, we descend through Stella Point and Barafu to Millennium Camp. It’s a long, tough day, but your sense of joy and achievement is unmatched.

Distance: 10 km | Time: 4–5 hours | Elevation loss: -2160m
Your final walk takes you back through the rainforest. It’s easier now as you descend, and you’ll notice how much your body has adapted. At Mweka Gate, we celebrate with cold drinks and a certificate of achievement. Then we drive you back to your hotel for a hot shower, delicious meal, and time to relax by the pool.

After breakfast, we take you to the airport or help you start your next adventure. Many guests continue with a wildlife safari or a beach holiday in Zanzibar. Whatever you choose, the memories of your Kilimanjaro climb will last a lifetime.
